Alabama's Derrick Henry Shows off New Car
I know it isn't Blazer related - that is why it is posted here. If you want to complain about it... go ahead - I thought it was an interesting picture 03-banghead

RE: Alabama's Derrick Henry Shows off New Car
The obsession continues. If Alabama was buying kids cars, I gurantee you the compliance staff (that already monitors all player's social media anyway) wouldn't allow them to post pictures of their ill-gotten items. What's more likely is that Mr. Henry's family took out a loan for the car in expectation of his future income

Also, Jordan Howard drives the 2013 model of this car, wonder if McGee got it for him? 05-stirthepot

RE: Alabama's Derrick Henry Shows off New Car
What brand / model / year is it? Since athletic scholarships have no required means test (as does Pell Grants, for example), it is very possible that his family provided the car out of family pride and finances. There have, for example, been kids from Mountain Brook, Vestavia and Hoover family households who have gotten full ride scholarships to Bama and AU in the past. Where is this guy's home located?

It's just a Dodge something or other. Less than $30,000, and it could be used and/ or a lease.

Or it was a booster who bought it, which is more likely than the university being the culprit. If it were a Bentley, I'd be suspicious, but it's just a mid-level American car, and it might not even be new.

The compliance staff obviously doesn't monitor the social media too closely, because he's arguing with individual people about it on Twitter. It gives off a "methinks he doth protest too much" vibe, even though I'm sure there's nothing to this particular situation. I doubt the kid is dumb enough to tweet a picture of something he was given in violation of NCAA rules, and I know NCAA athletes everywhere get schooled on what they can and can't do with boosters and fans. At least I hope they do.

The obsession is grounded in legitimate concerns, and you better get used to it because it will never fade.

RE: Alabama's Derrick Henry Shows off New Car
Alabama does provide players car to drive. I know this for a 100% fact, and have personally seen an Alabama recruit take delivery of his car, then had confirmed that what I had seen was exactly how they do it from a coach.

I didn't think there was anyone out there who didn't accept that it went on as a fact.

I still don't. If it was done as open as you've described it, unless you were in some kind of insider situation, I think such a policy would be a little more noted. I'll believe it when I see it, as you apparently have

EDIT: not saying you're making stuff up, I just have a hard time believing it

Yeah, just like the dumb*** on twitter with the cash last year?

These guys are getting paid and given things all the time, you are naive if you believe the only reason so many players flock to certain schools is for the experience.

You have two athletic programs in this state who publicly acknowledge that they both spend between $200,000 and $220,000 on EACH of their student athletes every year (at least since 2008, the first year of the Delta Cost Project that examines university athletic spending across the nation). Who in this state's political world is going to demand an audit of every dollar UA and AU spend to win those BCS NCs?

The NCAA might want to do just that, but it lacks any power to take any but voluntary statements in evidence. Usually someone involved has to get mad at someone to open up any such can of worms. Had Logan Young not "stiffed" a Memphis HS coach the $200,000 he was promised, we would be still thinking that big Memphis lineman, Albert Means, went to Bama because he liked the school and its coaches.

I'm not going to continue to field explanations for every single social media activity of athletes, because I'm not trying to be a defender of the P5 schools, but if you looked at the Instagrams of the average kid the age of the person you're talking about, you would find a picture just like that, whether or not they player football in the SEC.

I'm not saying I don't think that cheating goes down in any of these places, but it's not that apparent in the 21st century, you're not just gonna find it on social media

How many of you as kids had a relative sell your parents an unused/little used car for $1 or much cheaper than it's true value? Easy credit terms as well as invoices are very loose words in auto sales. Very easy way for a rich booster to get a car into a recruits hands legally & cheaply

RE: Alabama's Derrick Henry Shows off New Car
I've told this story before but I worked with a guy who played football at the Tuscaloosa campus. Told an assistant coach he needed a car. Coach told him about a dealership a county over that could hook him up. Goes to the dealership, sees a car he likes, and asks the salesman what he's asking for it. Salesman asks him, "How much money you got on you?"

And that's how a Tuscaloosa football player got a 4 year old Caddy Sedan DeVille for $74.

Row Todd.

The only story I have been told was by a fellow teacher who said a red sports car blew by him at night on I-59/20 headed west. All he could make out was a license plate that said "DEUCE".

Of course not. From what read on this board, McGee only cared about himself. He wouldn't get a player a car.

If McGee was buying players he did as bad a job of it as he did most everything else. Except maybe special teams.
