RE: MAC UDFAs
The idea the NFL limits the total payout is ridiculous considering everything must fall under the total team salary cap anyway. They give millions away at the top of the rosters but limit the bonuses to peanuts for the leftovers from draft day?

RE: MAC UDFAs
The Lions gave TE Joseph Fauriaa $12,500 bonus last year when he was one of the more highly sought UDFA's. He caught 7 TD's last year, so I think he was worth it. :)

The conference seems to be getting more kids into camps. Couple that with Fischer and now Mack both getting drafted before the 1st Big Ten-ish player, the conference as a whole should find it easier to recruit those *** type of players that go to second echelon "power" conference schools.

You can go to Illinois and get drilled by MSU, OSU and UM, or you can go to a MAC school and play on national TV, compete for a title, go to a bowl game and get a chance at playing in the league.

You won't get one of these playing football in Champaign-Urbana.

RE: MAC UDFAs
I really pulled that data to see how many UDFAs really stuck around. From the http://www.pro-football-reference.com data, there were 1,973 players who got into NFL games last year. 613 of these were not drafted, so that's 31%. They got 1,874 game starts, which was about 16.5% of all starts.

So there is some significance to the UDFAs to NFL teams

I believe Andy Cruse of Miami was on the Texans' practice squad, if that counts.

And the eight players on Inactive status in the practice squad sometime over the course of a season will also include a number of UDFA's.

Not all of those will have been signed out of camp. Teams will sign street free agents over the course of the year, and the ones that got the longest looks at an NFL training camp are likely candidates if injuries hit their position.

And given players that have a go in the CFL and/or Arena football and get picked up as street free agents, the numbers of UDFA's that end up playing in the NFL sometime in the next three years is greater than the number that play sometime in their first year out of college.
