Track & Field Update
Today, at the Texas High School (UIL) Track & Field Championships, Rice signee Madi McClellan (The Woodlands) competes in both the 3200 and 1600 finals for Division 5A. Her toughest competition should be from Devin Clark of Smithson Valley.
Also, Jesse Roberts (Sanderson) will run in the Division 1A-2 finals of the 1600 meters. His two older brothers (Travis and William) are distance runners at Rice.

UIL Track: Smithson Valley's Devin Clark wins gold in the girls 5A 3,200 (10:20.31). She won by 1/10 of a second. It's her first state gold.
Did McClellan get silver?
Edit: Just found the results link. Race hasn't been updated yet. http://www2.uil.utexas.edu/tournament-re.../index.htm

I forgot. McKenzie Johnson also competed there, finishing 4th (2nd collegian) in the pole vault at 4.10 meters (13' 5.25").

RE: Track & Field Update
Just a reminder that Rice will be hosting the C-USA Track & Field Championships, beginning this coming Thursday, May 15, and continuing through Sunday, May 18. The multi-events (Decathlon and Heptathlon) will take place on Thursday and Friday. A handful of field events, along with a couple of distance races are scheduled for Friday. Saturday will see prelims in running events, along with some field. Sunday will be all finals.

RE: Track & Field Update
McClellan was 2nd in what must have been a heck of a race. Just 7 seconds off the state record (and 3 seconds faster than what the 4A runner - the state XC runner of the year and a Princeton signee - did in winning that division).

I'd like to see the photo. Heard it was an inch or two.
Also, it's the state MEET record. The UIL, in its arrogance, does not list anything done outside of their Austin meet. The record is 10:07.15 by Chelsey Sveinsson of Dallas Greenhill Academy.

RE: Track & Field Update
Not Rice related, but this is a pretty cool story coming out of the Texas state meet.
Quote:She hasn't had many bad days jumping, improving on her eighth-place finish and 10-feet-6-inch vault last year to fourth place and 11 feet this year. That it came as her eyesight deteriorated to almost total blindness since the 2013 state meet, and after two eye surgeries last summer . . .
Led around the track by her guide dog, Vador, who has been her constant companion since May 29, her 16th birthday, Brown is guided down the runway and to the box where she plants her pole by a high-pitched beeper and her two coaches positioned next to and behind the mat.
http://espn.go.com/espnw/news-commentary...field-meet
And the money quote.
Quote:"Life is changing all the time. So I treat it as more of a challenge, and when I lost the rest of my vision, I just looked at it as another opportunity to overcome something bigger. I thought, on the bright side, I can't get any blinder, so the method I've figured out should work the rest of my vaulting career."
