tirerack.com has the best prices if you know exactly what you want, but the shipping is insane.

Known Sam for years. Good guy great family.

RE: Best Place to Buy Tires?
Munford Tire is the cheapest I've found anywhere, I know its probably a bit of a drive and you might spend as much in gas as you'd save. I still want to give them a shout out though because I have yet to go in there for anything related to a tire that I've paid for except the initial purchase of the tire. Flats fixed for free even if I didn't buy the tire there, tires rotated and balanced and never been charged, and the lowest prices I've found anywhere.

They once quoted me $1400 for little more than a brake job.

Firestone tried to totally rip me off once, too. I do not trust them.

Firestone in Germantown on Exeter did rip me off big time with an A/C repair once. Spent $1,000 on a repair, only for the A/C to go out again one month later. I took it back and told them it's out again. Then they came back and told me it was something else, and it would cost another $1,000 for that repair. I figured out what they were doing. I got the impression they just poured some new Freon in it to cool me off for a few weeks.

So I took my truck to Express Oil change and the guy said he had absolutely no idea what Firestone was talking about. All it needed was a $150 replacement part. Worked like a charm from then on out. Firestone tried to gouge me for $2,000 for a simple A/C repair that Express Oil fixed for $150. Firestone has never had business from me ever since and never will again as long as I live, and Express Oil has had my business ever since.

I've been through that AC repair fiasco before. Now I always look for someone who specializes in AC repair. Replaced a compressor on my wife's car two years ago for about $1400. About six months later after an hour on the road it would blow cold air out one side of the car vents and warm air from the other.

If you stopped to eat or gas up the AC would work again for about an hour or hour and a half. It turned out to be a small component on a phenolic board. Was that the problem to begin with? I'll never know.

Firestone in Germantown is a total ripoff avoid at all costs.

Yep. I've always had great service at all their locations. I'm of the type that will pay a little more for quality service.

RE: Best Place to Buy Tires?
The last three sets of tires I have bought came from car dealer listings on eBay. They were the new tires taken off new trucks being replaced by bigger tires or for whatever reason. They were all brand new with maybe 25 to 50 miles on them. They were all Michelin and were half the price of what they cost brand new at Sam's, which had one of the lowest prices around for the Michelins.

I paid $550 including the shipping for a set of 4 of the Michelin MT 255/70/18 and paid $75 to have them mounted and balanced. The same tires were a little over $1200 with mounting and tax at Sam's. This works for truck tires because people upgrade tires and wheels when buying new so they can get it financed up front. So if it is a truck tire you need, then look on eBay and be patient. You will find what you need for half the money. You just won't get a manufacturer's warranty which are usually worthless.

Like I said, this last set was the third set I have gotten this way and have never had a problem. All have come from car dealers and all have had shipping included. But read the tire reviews to make a good decision on which brand of tire to buy. I will only buy the Michelin as they get 70,000 good, safe miles per set.

Gateway has been awesome for me for several decades, even though recently they cannot diagnose why my tire warning light keeps coming on.

My 02 Chrysler 300M has been telling me to service the tire pressure sensor system now for about 6 months. The batteries are running out, and the dealer told me it would cost about $700 to replace (parts and labor). F that...I can get the new sensors for about $45 a piece and have them installed when I get new tires in the near future.

Check with a local parts store and see how much new sensors cost...do it online...

Thanks for the info. The sensor system on my 2005 Scion tC does not have actual sensors in the tires. The ABS system deduces there is a tire problem when the rolling resistance in the tires is not equal. I have been advised that there is absolutely nothing wrong with my tires or air pressure, but the light keeps coming back on after I had a nail removed. The spare is not causing this either, because it has no sensor.

I had a Scion where the TPMS sensor would often give a false-positive. I've seen the problem on other Toyotas as well.

I have a Tundra now that doesn't seem to have the same problem. It can be annoying.

Yeah, esp. because my tire sensors have always worked well until now and let me know when I had a nail. My car is 8 years old, so maybe that has something to do with it. I hate it that now I can't tell if I have a real problem or not. When I find an afternoon to kill, I will address the problem again. BTW, my tC has been the most AWESOME car ever, in every way.

The Firestone at Highland and Poplar tried to rip me off for hundreds, when I really had no problem at all.

BTW, I have Proxes 4's on my compact sports car, and they are awesome in the rain and make the ride a bit cushier. They are high performance and are not the quietest when they get a little mileage on them. But they are very safe and look great.
