I'd prefer the extended alliteration of May Mayhem.

Three of today's games were snoozers, but there was one for the ages: against Cornell, Maryland roared back from a 5-1 halftime deficit to tie the game at 7-all with eight minutes left, then scored the game winner with 2 seconds left of the clock.

Two upsets today, both of which were convincing:
Johns Hopkins dominated #8 Virginia 14-8, and Drexel shocked #4 Penn 16-11.
Top-seed Duke is currently manhandling Air Force, and #2 Syracuse takers on Bryant in about an hour.

Check out the end of the first half in the Drexel / Penn game here. Three goals in 11 seconds!

Quarterfinals this weekend -- and the first time in forever that four unseeded teams are in the quarters:

Saturday (ESPN2): #7 Maryland v Bryan and #6 Notre Dame v Albany
Sunday (ESPNU): #1 Duke v Johns Hopkins and #5 Denver v Drexel

In each case, the first game is at 11 central and the second is at 1:30 central.

RE: May Madness is underway!
While the Owls were needing extra innings against La Tech, #6 Notre Dame needed extra time of their own yesterday to hold off upstart Albany 14-13 in their quarterfinal. In a see-saw game, Notre Dame built a 4-0 lead in the first eight minutes, then fell behind 12-7 with eight minutes to go, then tied it at 13-all with three minutes left in regulation, then scored the game-winner 90 seconds into overtime. The game was played at Hofstra University on Long Island before a sellout crowd of 13,519. Stars for the Irish were attackmen Kavanagh and Doyle and goalie O'Connor (I'm not making this up).

In the other quarterfinals, #1 Duke bested Johns Hopkins 19-11 earlier today; #7 Maryland dispatched Bryant yesterday in similar fashion, 16-8; and #5 Denver leads Drexel 9-3 late in the second quarter.

From today's RUPBA newsletter (Houston's leading information source):

Quote:All lacrosse fans in Houston are invited to the 10th annual Greater Houston Lacrosse NCAA championship party from 11:30 am to 2 pm on Monday (Memorial Day). The event takes place at Buffalo Wild Wings Midtown at 510 Gray between Brazos and Smith. Click here for more information.
http://www.uslacrossechapters.org/greate.../Home.aspx

Faceoff is not til noon, so you can hustle from BWW in the Village (baseball selection show party, which will be winding down by 11:14 at least) to BWW in Midtown without missing a beat.

In Saturday's semifinals, it's #1 Duke v #5 Denver at 12 noon central, followed by #6 Notre Dame v #7 Maryland at 2:30, all on ESPN2.

Notre Dame attackman Matt Kavanagh scored 5 goals and the Irish defense stifled Maryland's attack as Notre Dame beat the Terps 11-6.

Earlier in the day, Duke turned back a late surge by Denver to prevail 15-12. In their three games to date in this year's tournament, the Blue Devils have scored 54 goals.

So Monday's championship is a rematch of the 2010 final, in which Duke edged Notre Dame 6-5 on a fast-break goal off the opening face-off of overtime.
