Financial advisor needed
I'm looking for an advisor who doesn't sell anything but their time for advice on retirement planning and triaging debt, not investment advice. I want someone who is personable and easy to talk to.

Just need a general household finance hacker for the Golden Years, or in my case, the Downhill Slide. 03-lmfao

Thanks, y'all!

There are advisors that don't sell anything? I've never met/worked with one.

I think there are some that sell only their time. I don't need anyone's judgment being "clouded" by trying to sell me an investment.

The reason I need advice is BECAUSE I don't have any investments. (except for 3 well-educated chillens and a recession-hit house) 03-lmfao 03-weeping

You can go to NAPFA.org and find fee only advisors in your area. [/font]

I too have a wonderful financial advisor who helps me with my retiremount accounts and brokerage advice. Unfortunately, she is not a tax expert. Whatever you do, involve someone who knows about the tax implications. It has burned me two straight years now.

Why not someone with something to sell? Just curious. I mean, if you are asking their advice and they have a product that would be beneficial you simply don't want to hear it?

You sound like me. Proud of our three college graduates. Can't believe the amount of money they are earning at their ages, but glad they are. We gambled on dumping a lot of money into a house thinking that we would build a lot of equity and that would contribute to our retirement when we get ready to downsize.

Simple. I have absolutely no money to buy anything. Just a lot of student loan debt, no retirement accounts at all.

And like I said, I'm leery of anyone selling something because I am afraid they will be more intent on selling me what benefits them the most and not what I really need. I've been that route before.

Yep, the house I have had for 32 years has lost value, about $50,000 since the Recession. But my children are all self-supporting, and two of them got jobs within a month of graduation making more than I make, which ain't bad.

Good advice. I met someone lately who advised me that I should keep my "good" (tax deductible) debt and pay it down slowly.

Sorry you've had some bad experiences. Only reason I ask is that I work in the financial industry...and in a advice and sales type position. I do have to sell, sure, but I never being up something if it won't be beneficial. I can't tell you how many times I call on someone, build some rapport, and offer a sale...a sale on a product that will cost them NOTHING but save thousands upon thousands....and I am shot down instantly. People just don't want to be sold.

My advice, be open to a "sale" but be cautious to the advice. There are more honest salesmen than what you previously had. Sometimes their "sale" won't cost you a thing but may benefit you greatly.

That's still selling something, though.

Lots and lots of mistrust out there. I dealt with it all the time too when I was in the industry. Could have all the benefits in the world, but lots of people simply won't entertain the idea if they feel like they're being sold something.

Agreed. But my situation is that I can afford to pay for an hour or two of advice, but I am not even meeting monthly expenses right now. When I say I have nothing to invest, I mean not $10. And I have no investments to juggle around.

I need overall advice on when to take SS, which debt to pay first, whether to sell my home now or later, whether I may be missing some govt. benefits that I might qualify for (divorced spouse), just Household Finance 101 stuff.

I understand. I have had a couple great investment counselors who made me a little money, but at this point and my age and lack of assets, I cannot affort a misstep. I need a very broad assessment of my situation, not a focus on investments because they are just not possible for me in the foreseeable future.

RE: Financial advisor needed
Thanks for the article, K2. However, it's water under the bridge now. I have parent tuition loans for them and they also each have about $40,000 in their own tuition loans. That is what it took to get them through private and out-of-state colleges. It was worth every penny. They went to the schools that had the best programs in the nation for their major. They have great jobs and will have a lifetime of enjoyment of being graduates of their particular schools. I doubt any of my children would have consented to take on any more debt for college, so I paid a portion for them. It's just insane what college costs. They may well end up supporting me.
