But how are they going to drop 10,000 bucks from the rafters in an outdoor statium?

The city of Atlanta has gotten a half dozen proposals for the area. Now its down to politics to see who they pick.

This was always the plan. Nothing else fits there.

They can fit all 3000 fans in it.

That said, seems too big for their purposes and a giant waste of money because of that.

Seems a giant waste of money to tear it down after just 25 years.

Realistically, its a sketchy part of town and it will be slow and uncertain if someone other than Georgia St. gets it.

That suggests that they have plenty of leeway. For instances, they can get really creative, have a lower deck with extra large seats, and a top deck that you only have top open up for things like stadium concerts.

Mixing it with student housing, retail, and paring down the stadium...it is a good plan. I hope they pull it off. Would bring their school and football atmosphere more in line with the conference.

Is Turner Field anywhere near GSU? You got to think an on campus stadium would be preferable.

Turner Field is just outside Downtown Atlanta, where Georgia State is located. Click on the article, in the picture you can see Downtown Atlanta and the Georgia Dome in the picture in the background.

Georgia State will have it's work cut out for it competing with so many other sports options in Atlanta and Georgia, let alone entertainment options but this will be a positive step forward.

Looking at two different maps, GSU doesn't seem to have much land to work with on campus proper. Although Turner Field seems to be less than a mile down the street, so it doesn't seem like it would be that far.

EDIT: It took me a long time to write the post, so I apologize if I seem redundant.

Counting its original configuration as Centennial Olympic Stadium, Turner Field will not even be 21 years old at its tentative demolition in January 2017. Even if you count the July 1993 groundbreaking, it still won't be 25 years old when the Braves leave.

There's no way they could put a stadium downtown. Its basically pay the Falcons in the Georgia Dome and its successor-an oversized facility they pay rent on-or this place which they can own and do other things with. Turner Field is about a mile walk from the Georgia State MARTA stop, just as the Georgia Dome is, but this would be part of a nearby South campus. The first part of the property with the parking lots is only about a half mile from the rest of campus.

Less than a mile. Students park there for school.

I'm sure there will be all sorts of opposition to the idea but this could be huge not just for GaSt but the neighborhood.

Most crowd activity will be weekends, the weeknight activity will be sports that even if drawing capacity crowds will create barely noticed traffic in that area except the occasional weeknight football game.

It would be likely (or at least hopefully) attract small bars and restaurants that would be local rather than chain helping create a community atmosphere along with some light retail.

The "worst" likely outcome would be the neighborhood turning into a desired location for young professionals.

Noticed AJC didn't mention that the new dome would be a three tenant operation if GaSt went there with the Panthers being lowest on the pecking order.

There will be pockets of opposition from people in the neighborhood hoping for a non viable solution. Right now though most of the neighbors I have heard from are very positive about this and this is an area where neighbors are extremely active in the community and will start an online petition or boycott in 37 seconds. The plan fixes a lot of existing problems while providing a mixed use development in between neighbors and athletics. It also provides foot traffic for retail on a daily basis. Win win and win.

The Falcons, Panthers, and Phoenix (the apparent name of the MLS team) will be fighting for dates from September-December. The MLS Cup is played around the time of most FBS conference championship games. Georgia State needs their own place.

When Phoenix gets an MLS franchise, will they call it the Phoenix Atlanta?
