I have a job interview in San Antonio next Friday. I'm flying in early Thursday morning. Any suggestions for time killers and places to go to get a real feel for the city & surrounding area? I've never been there before so I'd kinda like to know what I might be getting into.

REAL Mexican food suggestions are greatly appreciated. NOM, NOM, NOM.... 04-cheers

RE: UTSA Fans
things to do:
Riverwalk
Alamo: http://www.thealamo.org/
Marketsquare: http://www.sanantonio.gov/marketsquare/events.aspx
Mexican Restaurant: Mi Tierra: http://www.mitierracafe.com/

good luck with the interview. If it goes well, I guess the next question might be where to live.

Depends what part of the city you will be, there are good places to eat all over, it's a pretty big city, so are you going to mind driving or would you rather stay in close proximity to the area you will be staying?

I'll know where I'm staying soon. The office is off of Charles Anderson Loop, looks like maybe a few miles east of UTSA near Hwy 281. I'll be staying near there or possibly downtown.

For food: Mi Tierra just outside (west) of the riverwalk is a nice place if you are around downtown.
As for time killers well there is the typical touristy stuff like the Riverwalk, Alamo. The Pearl Brewery area also if you get the chance and is access via the Riverwalk.

WARNING: There isnt any GREAT barbeque in San Antonio. There are plenty of places that are OK, to Good, but if you want great, you need to go to Luling, or Lockhart. What ever you do- Stay out of Bill Miller BBQ

While true, I think Rudy's is pretty good.

Since you're going to be in the Stone Oak area. If you want a great burger check out Bracken Country Store. It's just north of 1604(Anderson Loop) on Nacodoches Rd. http://www.brackenstore.com

Pearl Beer? Yuck! It's almost as bad as Falstaff. Anyone remember Falstaff? I could pick it out of a selection of six beers blindfolded. I would get the dry heaves with just one taste. Turrble.

Keep this ignorance out of the thread please. The Pearl Brewery is a DISTRICT with restaurants, shops, and live music. I have been there many times without once having a sip of Pearl beer. He wasn't talking about the beer.

The food must be great in San Antonio - and I'm guessing Barkley wasn't talking about KFC.

You are so mistaken. SA has some very good BBQ. Try B&D in the Southtown district. It is very, very good. In fact the Southtown area has some very good eateries as does the Pearl Brewry District.

RE: UTSA Fans
The NT guy is right about the BBQ in SA. Lulling and more towards Austin for BBQ. As for Mexican, there are many and many varieties. If you want some awesome Mex, try El Mira Sol on Blanco Rd inside Anderson (loop 1604). Parking could be a problem if you get there late. The margaritas are IMHO the best as they are hand made with fresh squeezed limes. Careful, one margarita and you WILL be feeling the buzz. If you are looking for authentic Mexican, the same family that does El Mira Sol also has La Fogota. I haven't been there in quite some time and it is a little out of the way from where you are interviewing. Another of my favorites is Cha Cha's just inside of Loop 410 at Bandera Rd. on the right across from the HEB and behind Gumba's pizza. Everything I have had there is superb. I really like the Texas style enchiladas. There so papilla's are unique and to dream for. By the way, the Tres Lechese at El Mira Sol is really good and you probably have never had this desert. Stay away from the Mexican restaurants on the River Walk, they are bad!

Places to go:
River Walk is always the place I take out of town visitors - you can take a river cruise and get some history of SA along with a pleasant ride. It does get hot here and particularly on the river walk unless you are in the shade. You can spend a whole afternoon there just seeing the sights. The Alamo is just a stones throw from the River Center Mall which has an entrance off of the River Walk. Just outside of that entrance there is usually group from Peru playing pan flutes which is quite different from what most people have listened to. The Alamo is quite historic but not a lot to look at. If you are a history buff then that is a great stop but you won't be wowed by the size of it.

There are many more things to see but it is dependent on your interests. The hall of horns at the brewery is nice and not far from the River Walk.

Hope your interview goes well. Who are you interviewing with?

RE: UTSA Fans
If you want real Mexican food you gotta go to the small restaurants. Havent really put much effort into it but the best Ive been able to find around the UTSA area is Jalisco Grill on Babcock.

Other things to do in SA aside from whats already been mentioned...Six Flags is only a couple of minutes from UTSA. La Cantera Mall is around there too if you want to go shopping. Sea World isn't too far.

Get a Super taco from Rolandos Super Tacos off Blanco Rd. It's worth an update status on Facebook.

FYI, if you say Anderson Loop, most would probably know what you are talking about but would probably look at you funny. It's just Loop 1604 (and Loop 410 for the other loop).
