With the net neutrality ruling today we could be looking at the Roku possibly hitting its zenith. Time will tell if it holds up.

I have a friend who does some sort of tech stuff for a local hospital. One of the things he does involves getting calls at night because they can't find the x-rays or CAT scan or MRI of a patient which apparently normally means the tech put the digital file in the wrong folder, he hunts it down and moves it.

He says in early evening it is usually easier to drive to the hospital and do it than do it remotely because cable is so slow when dealing with these huge files, after about 10pm he can do it from home.

I can see the cable companies wanting caps because their infrastructure isn't really up to it.

But if I were on cable here and they started talking caps, I'd move to ATT.

AT&T has caps too.

Your friend should have a machine on the local network to remote into... using RDP, or some other protocol. That way he doesn't need a lot of bandwidth for his VPN into the network and RDP, and he can copy it as if it is local to him through his RDP.

I use that way all the time... much smarter use of resources.

They normally don't require a software install ~ the VPN is between their user access POP and their content access POP ~ but they are most popular outside of the US to get around US region blocks. Since the US streaming video ad market has the best CPM rates, there is a variety of free ad-streaming sites that are region blocked to the US.

And given their bandwidth limits, the resolution they can support is more suited for a picture to put on a cellphone or tablet than one to put on a large screen TV.

If there are any "boxes" out there you can use to replace the cable box let me know. Do you get any free channels with smart TVs? I cut the cord on my home phone and use Nettalk, just plug into ethernet or use wi fi, has many features. $30 for an entire year.
Good packages on international calling also. Skype is pretty good also.

The only legal option for NFL is an antenna.

Baseball, you can subscriber to MLB's online service. It won't get you in-market teams but you can get out-of-market. For example in Little Rock, Arkansas if you buy the service you don't get Cardinals, Rangers, Astros or Royals games. But a lot of people here grew up watching WTBS and WGN and they are Braves or Cubs fans so they get anything that isn't a national telecast.

Hockey has a service, and has similar restrictions to baseball except for some reason Arkansas is designated Stars home territory which works great for the handful of hockey fans I know because they all seem to either prefer St Louis or Chicago.

NBA also has a service and I am not enough of an NBA fan to want it but what little I watch is Memphis and OKC both would not be available because they are in-market (along with Dallas).

Most internet providers offer ESPN3 and you can get a ton of games that aren't on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, or other national broadcast outlets.

Best scenario is to be a fan of a pro team or teams that don't claim your home as part of their market and be a fan of a college team that isn't often on national TV.

I think I am going to buy a Roku 3, and trim back my cable package. You need cable to link up some stuff with Roku, like the ESPN lineup.

ATT caps the old DSL service and mobile but not the UVerse internet product.

Hmmm... either way, if Comcast does this then they will do. They are in a duopoly and it would behoove them to make money hand or fist like Comcast.

Also behoove them to use it as a competitive advantage to increase market share.

They don't want a pricing war... we all know they can lower the price considerably now if they wanted to but neither side does that.

Look at the cellular market... T-Mobile has brought the war down to price for the first time ever here in the states. Verizon and AT&T are losing customers left and right.

AT&T, Comcast, Verizon, etc., don't want to start a war to eat up their profits in the internet arena. Don't expect anything that could create that war.

But two companies does not make a competitive market ... two companies is an oligopoly, and two firm oligopolies, "duopolies", often have quite cozy working rules to avoid cut-throat competition which would reduce the profits of both side.

That's why in those lucky countries overseas where they have successfully established a competitive market for broadband internet, the companies are more likely to invest in sufficient capacity to meet peak demand, rather than play games in putting the brakes on bandwidth during peak hours.
