About City of Akron

A city of 200,000 and the seat of Summit County, over 3-million people live within a 45-minute drive of downtown Akron. Brookings Institution identified Akron as one of America’s leading “legacy” cities. Newsweek magazine touted Akron as one of ten new “Tech Cities of the Future.” Akron is a center of research and manufacturing in polymers, plastics, composites and metals. In 2014, more than 150 Fortune 500 companies have facilities in Greater Akron. In 2015 Akron was named one of the “Most Innovative” cities by Global Trade magazine and one of the “most affordable places to live” by CNN Money.

Akron is the story of the renaissance of a great American city. The headquarters for BF Goodrich, Goodyear, Firestone and General Tire over seven decades, Akron grew faster between 1910 and 1920 than any city in America. By 1950, more than 70,000 people were employed at Akron’s rubber companies. In 1909 the University of Akron offered the world’s first class teaching “rubber chemistry” and now is the nation's largest center of polymer education, and has an engineering program ranked in the top five nationally.

Being the first US city to develop the system of public education and offer free public education through 12th grade, Akron is recognized as a national leader in public school STEM Education.
