“Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions — everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses” - Juvenal – 100 A.D.

“The evil was not in bread and circuses, per se, but in the willingness of the people to sell their rights as free men for full bellies and the excitement of the games which would serve to distract them from the other human hungers which bread and circuses can never appease. The moral decay of the people was not caused by the doles and the games. These merely provided a measure of their degradation. Things that were originally good had become perverted and, as Shakespeare reminds us, ‘Lilies that fester smell far worse than weeds.’” - Admiral Ben Moreell, Of Bread and Circuses

The sports with the greatest satisfaction of playing vs watching for me are:
Playing hockey>>>>watching hockey
Playing baseball>>>watching baseball
playing golf>>>>watching golf

Football and basketball are much more fun to watch in my opinion. Probably because I suck at both of them. But they both do have absolutely awesome top plays. A great chip shot/putt is exciting too.

I've played hockey and football. And attempted to play basketball, but "white boy ain't got no 'J'".

Nothing in the world compares to playing hockey.

I've played hockey, football, baseball, whip softball, and golf. Hockey is great - expensive, but great, and I still have all my teefers, but my shins have a bunch of bumps from taking too many shots (defenseman) because the pads back then weren't as good as the pads now. I hated basketball. Always did, always will.

I kept my old skates lying around for years (CCM Tacks) until the wife threw them out. I'm still pissed.

I played defense as well. Laying down to block shots... always terrifying. I took a couple pucks off the ankle, which probably helps contribute to how easily they get injured now.

Still have a couple of my sticks and my set of skates. If there were any skating rinks around here, I'd go skating again, but the nearest rink is practically in Nashville.

I've seen today's skates and pads. I used to fear ankle shots, with today's skates I probably wouldn't even feel them. But $900 for a pair of skates and $200 for a stick is insane. When my kid got into hockey I thought it would put me in the poor house. Thank god he gave it up.

I have a relatively cheap pair of skates. Nothing state of the art, so the ankles were still vulnerable to hard shots. Plus I played close to 10 years ago.

But yeah, the prices of skates and sticks are a little ridiculous. I'd give anything to get back into it again, though.

I used to play back in the late 70's, early 80's, before wearing a helmet and face shield became mandatory. I once saw a defenseman try to block a shot by sticking his stick directly in front of the path of the shot but real close to the puck. The puck angled up and nearly took his jaw off. Lots of lost teeth, broken jaw, and all. Tough game back then. And then there were the Flyers and their Broad Street Bully meme. Everyone always wanted to fight and not play hockey. I used to suck at times, real hockey players don't like fights, just the fans do. Fans are idiots at times because fighting detracts from the game. I got into my share of fights but never started a single one of them.

Fighting can give a team some momentum if their player wins. There's a place in the game for fighting, but only on occasion.

I got into a few fights, and I admit I started one or two. Sometimes a team needs a spark and sometimes that will do it.

But I wore a helmet with a visor. No missing teeth for me or pucks to the eye for me, thanks.

To even give this level of credence to a "hip hop" artist that is not much more than a glorified poet/auctioneer should make any thinking person stop and say...WTF is going on? That of course would require thinking for ones self. We have pretty much been programmed from birth to not do that. It is like we are compelled to be asleep. I admit it. It is much easier to just nod off. Waking up is rude.

RE: Jay Z seen wearing a Five Percent Nation medallion during an NBA game
I was raised on pond hockey and watching it live is fun (my first sports event was a Nordiques game and I still try to catch the Canes and the Habs). Watching it on TV is akin to watching rats in a cage to me.

As far as sports, there aren't any that I really can't enjoy besides skiing and horse sports. I swore up until Fifa 06 came out that I would never like soccer, but now I love it. I'm into rugby, aussie rules, golf, and tennis. I thought I would hate a sport like cricket, but my wife made me watch the entire T20 tournament and her family is always talking about it, so I kind of married into it.

defenseman here too. First game I ever played I got a mean gash in the back of my leg from the underside of some kids stick. First couple of seasons had to play roller hockey before our city got an ice rink. For a 11/12 year old the transition wasn't very hard at all. Also had no chest protector my first season. Didn't realize until several games in that anyone else even wore them lol....I was a bit chubby from about ages 7-10 until my growth spurt (which didn't take long, thank goodness) so I didn't really notice that these kids weren't just naturally filling out their jerseys. 03-lmfao

Also played 2 years of basketball after I moved, but like I said I wasn't good. I love shooting around but I can't really contribute in real games unless I get a wide open shot.

Hell no... I have decided i will NEVER go to another MLB game ever again in person. Now if you ask me to go to a minor league game? I'll go to that.

But yeah, I'd take a day watching a hockey game live ANY day of the week over a baseball game.

Basketball... that's not so bad, since there's lots of stuff going at once.

But Baseball? Talk about watching paint dry....

These two sets of lyrics you posted were from an album that was supposed to be kind of a rap retelling of Denzel and Crowe's movie American Gangster. Find lyrics from another album.

It would be a better use of my time to re-lace all of my tennis shoes.

How about you find some Jaz-y lyrics that advanced our culture in some form?

Yeah, I'd say there's nothing on this one.. if he still owned part of the team, then I'd say yes, you should bring this up.

But I'd say since he's got his own sport agency now, shouldn't the NBA make it where he cannot do business with the Association? That would be the equivalent, would it not?

Oh there DEFINITELY something to see here. He's basically admitting racism. Not doing business with the NBA, NFL, or MLB would be a good start. If he was white, he'd be unuseable and mud across American media everywhere.

So it's ok for him to be racist. Got it, I'll mark that down in the rule book.

*It's ok to be racist as long as you don't own part of, or all of an NBA team and as long as you're not Republican*

Yeah but everyone in America knows him and hates him already.

Why is it that you guys, any time you find anything negative, regardless of relevance, blame it on or somehow connect it to the left?

I brought this up for 3 main reasons.

1. He's a major influence in the NBA

2. He wore a medallion which he knew represented superiority over another race.

3. I wanted to see what liberals said about it since Sterling was lambasted for being racist. (As figured, you all say "nothing to see here")

So I wanted to get both sides of it. Was Sterling more racist for telling his black girlfriend not come to his games with blacks, or was Jay Z more racist for wearing the symbol that means blacks are superior to whites?

This was to compare and contrast two stories that should have gotten the same amount of attention. One got zero, the other got national media attention. Neither should have gotten anything. However, the same ones who labeled Sterling a racist, said that this was nothing to see since it dealt with Jay Z. This thread proved my point. That's why some people also think it's a stupid thread.

And if anyone read the story, Jay Z was asked if he believed in all that stuff and he said yeah a little. So what does that mean to YOU?
