Love Mike,
This conference couldn't have a better leader. His vision is awesome. He will get us where we all want to be. "Tell those kids from Uconn or Ucf this isn't a power conference." TV deal was perfect short term strategy. Get eyeballs first and the money will follow ... Awesome Dude

6 more years of promises about TV money equals about $6m more for Aresco.

Yes. I have said this numerous times. If a crappy TV deal was inevitable, he should have retained T3 and women's hoops rights instead of just giving the away both as potential additional revenue for some schools, and as leverage to reopen the TV deal.

Also, he should have never invited Tulane and Tulsa which there is no doubt will hurt the next per-team payout. The fact that he didn't see CG reform coming is a huge failure (amongst the others).

You make some very good points, but what Aresco needed was leverage - which he didn't have.

The old BE football conference was crumbling and the C7 schools were leaving - just what leverage did Aresco have? We're lucky we didn't end up on FS1. 03-weeping

I don't think the TV deal is adequate compensation for the quality the conference is putting on the field and court but, if this winning trend continues, the next round will be much, much better. 04-cheers

Only time will tell if Tulane and Tulsa hurt the conference - I personally don't think so - especially when it comes to academics. I think they'll surprise a few people just like UCF and (to some extent) UConn did. Every team in this conference is on the rise - in all sports - unlike some conferences where the lower half of them have stagnated and become unwatchable - they're just riding the coat tails of a few top teams.

Aresco is doing the best he can with the product he has to sell. As the American continues to write it's future, we will develop the history and tradition that the other power conferences fall back on - they've peaked - we haven't. 04-rock

Agreed....He grabbed 2 of the best and wealthiest Private schools available..They have the resources to compete ie endowments..If it comes down to giving P5 benefits to players they can and will write the check...Be careful what you wish for in some ways these wealthy private schools hold an advantage ...Tulsa just bought a new BBall coach like taking an Aspirin...wait till SMU buys their next Football coach...

Endowments don't put fans in the seats, increase their small enrollments or make people watch on TV - the only things that should matter when thinking about inviting new teams. Endowments can't even be used for sports, and must stand in for the state support that privates don't get. For instance, the most recent $1.5B UConn got from the state is equal to having a $21B endowment (assuming a 7% return on the endowment).

This is what I have wondered as well. People seem to think we are locked in and the only way to get more $ is to extend the deal. I personally have no knowledge either way but I hope there were pre-determined escalators based on ratings, performance, etc... to increase the payout if certain things are met without adding to the deal. The league needs to be in the 8-10 range to stand a chance of hanging with the P5 so hopefully they get there sooner rather than later.

There isn't. If there was Aresco would be thumping his chest about it.

I think he did what he had to. If our product is good enough he can renegotiate early by giving a long term deal to ESpn to not shop it with Fox or anyone else at expiration...in essence the current deal would actually be able to be renegotiated..When Navy arrives we will have a decent Football Conference of pretty broad interest...

I wish you were right but I don't think that it will happen this way. Why would any consumer pay more for a quality product they bought on the cheap. Think of it this way... if you bought a candy bar for $1 and it was the best candy bar you ever ate, would you go back to the store and give them $2 because it was better than you expected?

They have all the leverage here unfortunately as they have the checkbook. At some point ESPN may increase the contract, but I don't expect it to take place until much closer to the re-negotiation window in an effort to put early resolution to contract talks.
