Marshall Spring Game - Pennington, Leftwich, Moss, Brown, Other Former Players Attend
Our spring game was this past Saturday. The format was Green vs White with Pennington coaching one side and Leftwich coaching the other. For the first offensive snaps of each team, Leftwich and Pennington were under center. First play of the game was a pass from Pennington to Moss.

There were some pretty cool pictures of Cato with Leftwich and Pennington (saw one over weekend, will find later).

Official attendance number was just under 9,200. For us, that's a pretty big spring game attendance number.

Yet another reason why Chad Pennington is one of the best things that's happened to Marshall football - he personally reached out to every former player that was there to get them to attend.

Marshall Spring Game - Pennington, Leftwich, Moss, Brown, Other Former Player...
That's awesome that those guys would come back for the game. I was sorry Pennington's injuries cut short his time with the Dolphins.

We've been blessed with NFL alums who come back. I imagine it's quite a thrill and learning tool for current players. I hear the recruits were very impressed with the whole day.

There were probably an additional 5,000+ in the parking lots tailgating during the game. It was almost like a real game day tailgating atmosphere. Especially in the West (main) Lot.

While I'm sure to miss someone, the following former Herd players were at the Green-White Game on Saturday: Byron Leftwich*, Chad Pennington*, Randy Moss*, Troy Brown*, Chris Crocker*, Chris Massey*, Doug Chapman*, Vinny Curry*, Mike Powers, Steve Williams (current Mayor of Huntington), Denny Bellamy, Todd Ellwood, Mark Mitchell, Mike Williams, Mike Hamrick (MU Director of Athletics), Sam Botek (who spoke at the Fountain Awakening ceremony Saturday morning as member of Young Thundering Herd, 1971-72), George Elliott, Madison Sayre, Howie Harris, Aaron Ferguson, Reggie Giles, Dave Walsh (covering event for The Herald-Dispatch), Mickey Jackson, Nate McPeek, Duran Smith, Ralph Street, Orlando Washington, Shannon King, Jimmy Parker, Javonne Jenkins and Jason Toy of Big Buck 101.5 FM, who did interviews on the sidelines - including new basketball coach, Danny D'Antoni (who got a standing ovation from the over 9,100 in attendance).
It was the first G-W Weekend with sunshine and no rain since Doc Holliday took over program five years ago. Former basketball players who came to the game included Mark Patton (of WAM fame, as walk-on from basketball team) and Tim Dagostine, with their sons, as did former football manager Jim Woodrum - and me, his brother, another former FB mgr., covering for Herd Insider - and former Voice of the Herd, Frank Giardina. Some other players, like Chris Deaton, (current UNCC coach) Phil Ratliff, (current UNCC strength coach) Jim Durning and a few more were at Deaton's wedding that afternoon and couldn't be there, but it was still the third or fourth overall biggest crowd for a Spring Game (in 2006, We Are Marshall shooting crowd drew almost 17,000 and in 1989, at Fairfield Stadium, a big promotion and free shirts for everyone drew the only +10,000 crowd to the old home of the Herd. A good crowd a couple of years ago for a concert after the game approached 8,000 or 9,000 - until weather broke loose).
*Former or current NFL players
