With that said, Bamablazerfan what is your opinion on the bowl season?
There are now three bowl games of national championship relevance. All the rest are of a sliding scale of irrelevance to the fans of any team not in a particular bowl. I want UAB to start a bowl tradition as soon as possible, and it doesn't matter to me where we have to start.
Bowls began as a chance for teams who never got to play during the regular season to meet in the only time of year when train travel times permitted - the weeks of the Christmas / New Year Holidays. They usually had nothing to do with national championships unless some wire service writer wanted to get public attention. Keep in mind that until the 1960s, most national writers regarded the east coast Big 6 independents (Penn State, Syracuse, Army, Navy, Notre Dame and Pitt) to be the best programs in the nation. That is why so many of their players back then annually won so many of the top awards (and dominated the rosters of the NFL teams of the day).
The modern era of some of the bowls being endowed with BCS significance, changed the role of bowls and emphasized the chosen bowls as more relevant. Actually they are ALL irrelevant today to the NC except for the ones in which the Big Four will play. Since UAB is a long way from such national recognition (we are still chafing under the "Alabama-B'ham" label), we fans just need to concentrate of being at whatever bowl to which we get invited so they are glad they chose UAB. By the school's 50th anniversary in 2019, I expect we will have a start on a bowl game tradition.
