Critical news before Fall?
Every year, and rightly so, many posters hold off on predicting our football season until we see who actually shows up for camp. This may be the first season where the more critical news is who all makes it out of rehab and/or off the trainer's table. Have we ever had this many key players facing "do or die" - for the team - rehabs?

RE: Critical news before Fall?
Coach Clark said everybody'd be ready by June, and that most everybody was ready by the end of spring, but some were cleared so late it didn't make sense to put them out there and risk further injury.

S&C last year was clearly a joke. Now that we have one of our own (with NFL experience) calling the shots, our players should be much better prepared.

I thought our last S&C coach had NFL experience with Broncos

That's the thing. I like Clark and it's neat that Woodfin came home.
However, what we're saying about Woodfin is a lot of the things we said about Chandler, and what we're saying about Chandler, a lot of us said about Martin.

It's a vicious cycle.

At least until we get something/someone that works.

I think we've just been relieved that our injured were no longer hanging with their homies or talking on their cellphones...

RE: Critical news before Fall?
So last year, did we under train, over train, or just train badly? McGee constantly talked about getting everybody bigger faster stronger, to the point that I thought all the injuries were due to people getting overworked and their bodies breaking down. Now Clark is making it sound like everybody got hurt because they weren't strong enough.

It was pretty clear when watching McGee's teams that most of the players weren't very strong. McGee may have talked about improving the player's physical conditioning, but he (or the rest of his staff) clearly was not willing to put in the time and effort it takes to create an effective training program that can allow the less-talented players we have to play above their natural abilities.

Several of the current assistants are also heavily involved with the S&C program. Not only does Woodfin have NFL experience, he also helped train world class Olympic athletes in Los Angeles. The nutrition aspect has also improved dramatically under the new staff.

Nutrition was one of the main issues in the past... little things like supplying every player with protein & recovery suppliments after workouts wasn't happening with the last staff.
Zac is a great fit for our program... he knows where UAB has been and he knows where we're headed under Clark. He also has that UAB education, so no excuses!

Getting Zac was HUGE for the program! The fact that he played for Clark at Prattville is icing on the cake.

I can't speak for the new staff but i know for a fact that Supplements were handed out with the last staff. I believe the last staff over trained resulting in injuries.

If anything, we over-trained. Chandler worked the hell out of the players. He provided food and supplements for the players though. I don't know if this has to do with NCAA rules or the university, but players were provided for much better under Chandler than Martin. I don't think it had anything to do with who the coach was. Under Martin, players ran out of food in the summer and he would hand out hotdogs and sandwiches. Under Chandler, players had more access to food in the cafeteria. Martin handed out Ensures, while Chandler handed out Rocket Fuel protein shakes. I just think there was more support for food and nutrition when McGee was here, but obviously didn't make a difference considering everybody got hurt. I know Woodfin hands out fruit and protein shakes now and he makes the player do a lot more body weight workouts compared to Chandler and Martin.

I think under McGee it also was a bit of overtraining - from what I heard many of the players days started in the predawn & went till late night (no partying though) so were tired quite a lot from lack of sleep which that in turn led to the higher injuries.

That is my understanding as well.

I'm guessing the players wouldn't run through a wall for him either.

They liked Chandler a lot better than they did McGee, although they hated his workouts.
