For us old timers, the death of David Langner brings back bitter memories
Back in 1972 there was no real UAB sports program, and I had just gotten my MA degree in Secondary Education from the hand of Dr Joe Volker that summer.

I and friends were at the Iron Bowl game in the wooden Section "X" seats below the north stands. Bama had a 16-3 lead late in the 4th quarter, and Coach Bryant had apparently decided to "sit on the lead" and run the clock out. Then Fate (and Auburn) took a hand and Newton broke through to block two Greg Gantt punts and both were run into the north end zone by David Langner for TDs.

Auburn won 17-16 establishing a game for the ages as the immortal "PUNT - BAMA - PUNT" game. The famous radio call was done by Gary Sanders who later did the radio call of early UAB games.

Later when at a workshop at Woodlawn HS, I saw a composite senior football class picture from 1969 which had Greg Gantt punting, and to his right was teammate David Langner - they had been senior FB players at Woodlawn.

I'm not sure anyone here cares.

My post was in concern for my feelings, not about yours. Where were you in Nov. 1972? I was at that game.

I can confidently say that he wasn't.

Well it must have been a powerful loss to you then that after 42 years, you are compelled to talk about it on an unrelated message board. Go commisurate with others who were affected by the tragedy as you were.

Was not at the game, but it was pre-UAB athletics and I was an impressionable 10 year old and was a Bama fan. I have since reformed and became a UAB fan who doesn't feel compelled to trash up UAB boards with memories of the highlights of past Bama games

Gary Sanders called the game. See, it's the circle of life.
