RE: Rice vs. USM (Friday Game 1)
T8, no outs and a HBP and BB put two on for Keenan Cook. The wild Myrick is pulled for Lowery. Come on, Keenan. 0-fer-4 but he's due. Base knock here, Owls!

EDIT: Ah well, smart move by Wayne as Cook bunts Aquino and Stainback to 3rd and 2nd respectively. 1 down, Warren up. Sac here pushes the lead. Let's do it, Charlie!

EDIT: BOOM. 5-0 Owls. I have no idea how that play went down (sounds like a ground ball bounced off the pitcher to 2B, who threw out Charlie at 1B--but not before Aquino scored. 2 down. Stainback on 2nd for Reeves. New Eagle pitcher, Nunez.

Matt give up a one out, bad hop single, but the runner is caught stealing (ground out, single, CS, strikeoiutKK).

Aquino leadoff hit by the pitch. Myrick can't find the strikezone. Let's capitalize.
Stainback walked on 3-2 count. Runners on 1B and 2B, no outs. Gotta bunt here-- let's execute.
USM brings in their best LHP Luke Lowrey (16 app, 12.1 IP, 2-0, 2.19 ERA, .255 BAA, 1 BB, 9 Ks)-- strictly a situational lefty, but an effective one. This is the problem with having Cook and Warren back-to-back in the lineup.
Cook gets the bunt down successfully. Runners on 2B and 3B, one out. Well don.
Warren RBI ground out. 02-13-banana Runner at 2B, two outs.
And now the RHP Taylor Nunez (5 app, 3 starts, 0-2, 13.0 IP, 9.69 ERA, .275 BAA, 5 BBs, 9 HBP, 11 Ks)-- this guy has been clocked this year.

Good guys lead 5-0 heading to the bottom of the eighth inning.
Reeves ground out to SS.

Yes-- 8 for McCanna, 3 for Ditman. And I mentioned in the preview, USM strikes out a ton!

Uh-oh, over in San Antonio, that 5-0 Charlotte lead has shrunk to 5-2 in the bottom of the 9th. Charlotte just pulled its starter after giving up a homer, then the closer comes in and immediately gives up a single. No outs, tying UTSA run in the on-deck circle. Let's go, Charlotte!

EDIT: And UTSA grounds into a game-ending double play! Charlotte wins! UTSA falls to 11-8 in CUSA (as does ECU after the earlier FAU loss). Big helps to Rice.

1-2-3 inning for Matty (ground out, strikeoutKKK, infield pop).

Ewing struck out swinging.
McDowell walked. Runner on 1B, one out.
Hoelscher struck out looking. Fastball right down the pipe.
McDowell steals 2B. Two outs.
Teykl flied out.

Good guys take a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning.

Great job by the team, winning when you have to. Particularly good job by the two pitchers.

Woohoo! Rice wins! It seems antiquated, lacking chivalry, and awfully kinky, but spanking a Southern Miss never felt better. 5-0 Owls. Put her over your knee again tomorrow, Rice!!

Nice win guys. Way to go Seniors...

JP needs to ask McCanna if he would rather play 1b or pitch on Fridays...Townsend would say he would rather hit.

12:1 strikeout to walk ratio will win alot of games if they can eliminate the free passes.

RE: Rice vs. USM (Friday Game 1)
1-2-3 inning by Matty to close this one out and preserve our seventh shutout of the season. Terrific all-around effort by the entire team tonight-- despite all the adversity and distractions. 04-cheers

Game Ball #1: Kevin McCanna (W, 5-2, 5.2 IP, 4 hits, 0 runs, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 8 Ks)-- third consecutive Friday night win since assuming the mantle from Stephens and Lemond. Set a career-high in strikeouts, but the key (as usual for Rice pitchers) was pounding the strikezone and keeping the free passes to a minimum.

Game Ball #2: Shane Hoelscher (3-4, double, HBP, 1 runs scored, 3 RBIs)-- the senior stepped up and got the job done. In fact, he just missed a grand slam by inches.

Game Ball #3: Matt Ditman (Save #7, 3.1 IP, 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 BBs, 4 Ks)-- just lights out tonight. Saved the game with his strikeout with the bases loaded when he came in to relieve McCanna.

HUGE first win of the series. Let's get a good dinner, and great night sleep and repeat tomorrow afternoon. Let's clinch this all-important series tomorrow, and hand USM their first conference loss of the season. Just win, baby! Go Owls!

It doesn't seem that long ago that we had someone who did both. Joe, what's his name? The guy with a 3.15 ERA in 18 games in the majors last year?

Or we could use Fox as an example...
