RE: Dan D'Antoni To Be Named Marshall's Next Head Coach
We hired 3 up and comers over the last three hires. We got the fool, the tool, and the clown. It'll be nice to have some grace and wisdom at the helm for a change. The last solid hire we made was Billy Donavon and that was short and sweet. I'll take a loyal guy with connections and credentials this time around, but, sincerely, thanks for the concern.

The last solid hire we made was Rick Huckabay in 1983. Donavan wasn't here long enough to know if he was solid or not. He was here 2 years and went 13-15 and 18-12. Falling short of the Southern Conference title both years. One of our biggest problems from Herrion's staff is still on the bench and that was Mark Cline, hope Dan realizes that after a year and replaces him.

They're not coming to a CUSA school for virtually any coach, at least not one like Marshall. If Marshall had the history and support of someone like UTEP, maybe.
His NBA connections could make him an attractive to high caliber recruits though. I'd personally take someone with NBA connections over a guy like Underwood any day. Any assistant or HC with limited experience (like Underwood) is a risk, so I don't think D'Antoni is any bigger a risk and has a lot more potential upside with his connections to a well known NBA coach, players, agents, etc.
Don't be surprised to see him land some top European recruits.
If you really want top international talent, you need to get it from Australia or South America.
Europe has too good of a system for their best players. They can stay home, make a very good living for themselves, and still get a chance to play in the NBA. Why give up four years of earning potential to make nothing in America?
Obviously you can bring talent over from Europe, but it just isn't the best they have to offer.
Here's another.
