Great Article, can't believe the source
Quote:The age 21 rule sets the United States apart from all advanced Western nations, and it has pushed kids toward pills and other anti-social behavior.
Quote:The age 21 rule sets the United States apart from all advanced Western nations and lumps it with small or repressive countries like Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Indonesia, Qatar, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates.
Quote:What this cruel 1984 law did is deprive young people of safe spaces where they could happily drink cheap beer, socialize, chat, and flirt in a free but controlled public environment. Hence in the 1980s we immediately got the scourge of crude binge drinking at campus fraternity keg parties, cut off from the adult world. Women in that boorish free-for-all were suddenly fighting off date rape. Club drugs — Ecstasy, methamphetamine, ketamine (a veterinary tranquilizer) — surged at raves for teenagers and on the gay male circuit scene.
Quote:Alcohol relaxes, facilitates interaction, inspires ideas, and promotes humor and hilarity. Used in moderation, it is quickly flushed from the system, with excess punished by a hangover. But deadening pills, such as today’s massively overprescribed anti-depressants, linger in body and brain and may have unrecognized long-term side effects. Those toxic chemicals, often manufactured by shadowy firms abroad, have been worrisomely present in a recent uptick of unexplained suicides and massacres. Half of the urban professional class in the U.S. seems doped on meds these days.
Quote:As a libertarian, I support the decriminalization of marijuana, but there are many problems with pot. From my observation, pot may be great for jazz musicians and Beat poets, but it saps energy and will-power and can produce physiological feminization in men. Also, it is difficult to measure the potency of plant-derived substances like pot. With brand-name beer or liquor, however, purchased doses have exactly the same strength and purity from one continent to another, with no fear of contamination by dangerous street additives like PCP.

"The age 21 rule sets the United States apart from all advanced Western nations and lumps it with small or repressive countries like Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Indonesia, Qatar, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates."

That alone should speak volumes.

Only to a semi-literate.

Anyway, I the author makes some claims that would be difficult to support. Yet his premise holds, a drinking age of 21 (thanks to statist Elizabeth Dole) is inappropriate.

Of course I blame Dole, when in reality many states had this age long before she got her taste of power as a political appointee. So there is lots of disgust to go around.

Yep. Not to mention it's so unfair on so many levels. We can thank our federal politicians being purchased by the insurance industry and MADD making it a national issue. Oh, and it doesn't stop the 18-21 crowd from obtaining alcohol - so it's effectiveness sucks.

I don't have data to back this up, but in southwest Ohio it seems as though the prohibitionists are usually backed by religious organizations. They don't want someone telling them their rights when it comes to birth control and such (rightfully), but in turn wants to tell everyone else how to live their life.

There is no doubt that support comes from there. Vestiges of the WCTU have a hold throughout the country. I grew up in such an environment (obviously not far from your locale) and I warn my son about such things quite often.

Then there is also MADD, which is the secular brand of such crusaders.

Not so much. Those countries are mostly Muslim. Islam forbids drinking.

Yes, MADD is a joke. They've moved past what their original mission was and now they just want full prohibition.

Well, it was just a matter of time before the legalize crowd thought it would also be a great idea to lower the drinking age. Why not accelerate the downfall even more.

I have always held the belief that if someone is old enough to gear up and go fight for our country, or gear up and go fight a fire they are old enough to drink.

This is just great, let's just do away with any age restriction on drinking. While we are at it, Pedophilia, Beastially, polygamy, should all be ok, but no large sugary drinks or smoking cigarettes anywhere.

I know 18 year olds perfectly capable of drinking responsibly. I know 50 year olds who have never, and cannot now, do it.

It seems like you want a fundamentalist Christian country and not a "free" country of which you proclaim to want.

You know, I hear you people make silly comments like that and talk about freedom and liberty, but IMO you are doing nothing more than aiding the left in the dumbing down of our country.

We get it. You like drugs and alcohol and think everyone regardless of age should indulge.

I'm for individual liberties. Of course, we've had this debate before and you always say I'm a Democrat because anyone who thinks the current Republican party has lost its way has to be a Democrat.

No, he thinks it should be up to the individual to make decisions for themselves and not from gov't regulation.
