NBR - It's Gumbo Time Again!
It's time again for one of my favorite annual events here in the 'Ham. The Gumbo Gala is the primary fundraiser for Episcopal Place, the local diocese's home for the elderly and disabled. It happens this Saturday the 26th at Sloss Furnace, running from 11am till 2pm, but you really do want to get there early as the best gumbo pots get eaten up on the early side of the day. People find the stuff they really like and go back for seconds, and thirds... it gets gone and it's not like you can just whip up more. >grin<

There will be about 40 booths, both amateur and professional (local restaurant) entries. It's all you can eat. Belly up to a booth, fill your cup, eat it, move down a booth, rinse, repeat. Live music from Rollin' in the Hay. Bring a folding chair and a cooler and chow down. You'll see all kinds of gumbo, from traditional seafood shrimp, oyster and crab, to chicken, andouille sausage to more exotic like duck gumbo, there will be a lot to taste and enjoy. Family friendly and a lot of fun, y'all come!

Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door, all you can eat. Best deal in town.

Personally, I eat till I can barely waddle back to the car. It's a good time.

I'm glad it doesn't conflict with the Feast of St. Mark festival!

Since when is "All you can eat ", especially gumbo, not Blazer related? I've heard many stories about how much most of us can eat.

I believe it has to involve tailgating or death row wings (or both)...

Death Row Wings?

I said "all you could eat". I ain't putting those things in my mouth.

As brother Smaug so succinctly put it, "food shouldn't hurt".

They don't exist anymore. The restaurant that made them went out of bussiness shortly after grammernazi moved out ouf town.

Whatever happened to that Chinese place where someone found a cockroach in an Egg roll?

After the owner shot at the customer who had complained, I think the city pulled his business license.

BTW, The Gumbo Gala is one of about 5 food events in B'ham listed in the Wednesday NEWS Food section. The Lebanese church near UAB has its Lebanese Food event this weekend as well.

I don't *think* they sell beer. Desserts and soft drinks, yes. I usually just grab some and stick in a cooler on the way over, and no one's ever said a word. No problem with alcohol there. Also, there are still slots if anyone wanted to volunteer for some service time, see the web page.

The article at al.com does say they will be selling Good People beer.

Well, I guess I won't be bringing some Avondale Saison after all, but Good People is just fine.
