RE: Southern Mississippi?
that would be a huge surprise but after JC got the BC gig, I guess nothing should surprise us.

Is this a leak intended to drive his salary up to stay? Odd timing as some question even keeping him. I would be shocked to see them hire him. Question is, who would be on our short list to replace him in the event he bolts?

RE: Southern Mississippi?
Don't know if this has anything to do with it, but Justin Phelps, a former KSU manager is or was the Director of Basketball Ops at USM under Donnie Tyndall. Don't know if he is going to Knoxville or what, but there is a little connection.

Edit: It also appears the SFA head coach is USM's main target. Unless that falls through (which it could) I don't expect to see Sendy going anywhere.

I did not think his seat was that hot but some basketball coaches do leave their jobs to go for a lateral or even downward move if they think they may get fired in a season or two. I think it was just Missouri's coach just left for Tulsa and that was sort of the thinking there. Better to move than get fired if you can go to a decent place.

Southern Mississippi would be a lateral move in basketball with a very similar situation to Kent State except that traditionally basketball is not their big sport and football is the big sport on campus.

USM would not be a lateral move for Rob. That being said, he isn't even involved in this process.

Robs not going anywhere for next season but no way would this be a lateral move. USM plays in a bigger arena, has more fans, plays in a better conference and pays a lot better than KSU. It would be a similar move to what Geno did when he went to Bradley.

Lots of us KSU fans don't realize just how small time the MAC is.

I agree FlashFreak. Just browsing their schedule (and they were 15-0 at home) they play a conference that produced five teams with 20+ wins. Even the next four teams this season (Old Dominion, Tulane, UAB and Charlotte) are usually as good the best teams the MAC offers.

It actually isn't that big of a difference. They do play in a bigger arena and have more fans at a game (though they are about as far away from Bradley as we are from them) but I personally don't think of it as being so much more that it makes for a whole different tier. Their bigger arena is 8100 ours is 6300. There are a number of MAC schools that have similar or bigger venues than that how am I to think that is a bigger tier?

Plays in a better conference? You do know that they play in the current version of CUSA right? They no longer have teams like Memphis playing there USM was the best they had. Looking at the teams they have and their history CUSA is going to be strikingly similar to the MAC. Even with Memphis CUSA for a while has been a 1-2 bid league. Without Memphis this version of CUSA will be like the MAC where if the conference gets lucky they will have two bids. CUSA was number 10 in average attendance as a conference. The MAC was 14. It isn't that big of a difference really.

They do pay more but you have to make a caveat about that because CUSA for a long time has overpayed for what it gets (by a lot) and it has burned USM in many ways. USM had to drop a game against an AQ school at home for football because they could not afford to not play a bodybag game because their budget was stretched too thin. The school had the lowest budget in older CUSA and was similar to Kent where they were trying to get big results in their conference on a smaller budget. All this extra money also does not help them from getting poached either if as whenever one of their teams does well enough their coaches get taken too. It is also a very similar institution academically as it too is national class former normal school.

Is it a better situation? Yes. Is it enough to be really considered a big jump up? To me I have my doubts. There are teams with much better histories that I think you could say are closer to being a bump up. People like talking about attendance but after a year where they had the 25th biggest increase in attendance in the country it was situated about the same as Toledo. Normally their attendance is in the 3000s apparently and that isn't that much more than Kent which is in the upper 2000s (in a bad year).

I never said it was a huge jump up from KSU but clearly the head BB coach at USM is a bigger job than what Sendy has now. My guess is that their head coach is getting paid $400K -$500K a year. If I'm correct that's nearly double what Sendy is making. A lot of guys would consider that a "better job."

Isn't that similar to what a school like Ohio pays? If so then we are certainly in the same tier which is what I was saying all along. Yes it is a slightly better job but not the sort of job that you would leave for unless you had an outside situation prompting it. Bradley is a good case in point. Bradley pays more than that, has more fans, has a bigger arena, has a better history, and plays in a better basketball conference than USM. It is also a school that prioritizes basketball above all else which is not the case at USM ( they are a football school first and always). Bradley is closer to a final stop than USM. I don't think of USM as a final stop school so it is a simlar thing to Kent where most coaches go to make a splash and get a job at a high level basketball school. In this case you would really only leave if you think if the school gives you a better case for getting those better jobs.

Is USM better for getting you those higher paying gigs? Hard to say. Historically it looks like a no. It is not a school swimming with success in basketball (it has some but not a lot) and with the changing value that the conference is in I cannot say if that improves their chances. On one hand the conference has gone greatly down in value. This makes for an easier time to rack up wins but it also diminishes their recruiting efforts.

Is that the sort of school that a midwest coach can attain success? A bigger name school can give you the power/prestige to overcome your lack of influence in an area temporarily so that you can establish yourself. I would think that USM would not have enough to give you a good shot and I think in the long run you would be better served staying where you think you can get the most success to make a much better paying gig down the road.

USM paid Donnie Tyndall (who just left) a base salary of $500K last season. That is exactly double what Sendy made this past season. USM's new coach will probably get even more $$. With that said, I believe that most lower to mid level D-1 head coaches looking to make a move (if given the choice between USM or KSU) would choose the USM job and the $500K per season. I do not think of a new job that doubles ones salary as a "lateral move."

We had this same discussion when JC left for TCU for 700k. People kept calling it a lateral move.

I wouldn't. TCU was in the MWC which was and is a multibid conference with a school which had definite and possible aspirations for a AQ conference (which it succeeded in doing). USM has none of those things going for it. So to me that is a very different animal.

Also just because it pays more does not change whether it is a lateral move. If you work at Burger King and you decide to go work at McDonalds most people would say that is a lateral move even if McD's payed more since it is a very similar situation. That is what it feels like to me. To me TCU was closer to moving from BK to a Longhorn Steak House where it is a better quality restaurant and depending on who you ask it is that nice to not too nice level of food. In this situation a school like Florida would be closer to a 4 star place. USM would be a lateral move that in this case would pay more. Something to consider but still a lateral move.

This post made me hungry.

What a coincidence. I am always hungry. It does not help that I work for a company that serves restaurants.
