Unions?
Are you for unions or against them for college athletics? I am for them because if players get hurt at private schools and can't play again, they need to be compensated.

RE: Unions?
I am just sick of this amateur status BS.

It may have worked 10-15 years ago, but this is an entirely new generation and with the amount of change we have seen between now & then with the way ADs approach athletics specifically when it comes to revenue sports......

The concept of a workable amateur college athletics model is a lost cause.

We need to see either a huge regression where colleges throw in the towel on the "big money" athletic philosophy. Or they need to embrace it even more and start paying players. Either way this half in-half out system they are in right now is only going to lead to a train wreck down the road.

Since the NCAA & co. will not volunteer to take a step in either direction.....

The unionization situation is the best chance at forcing the ncaa & co to actually change wether it is towards a more amateur-like model or a more pro-like model. Either way the sport will survive under both models, and both have their ups and downs, but one thing I know for sure is that the status quo can not survive.

RE: Unions?
this is the dumbest reasoning ever

1. since when do players from pubic universities get compensated if they get injured......oh wait they don't so why would anyone single out private universities over public universities when both are the same in relation to the "issue" put forth

2. the vast majority of players will not be going pro anyway so their "compensation" for their "mad skillz" ends when they are no longer college eligible so why should they be compensated long term for something they were never going to be compensated for long term anyway

3. you are 100% incorrect in your very child like analysis that upon injury players (at private or public schools) are no longer compensated......because they are in fact still compensated they are still on scholarship and eligible to be a student at that university and to complete their degree while retaining all of the COMPENSATION of tuition, books, room, board and all of the other things that STUDENT athletes get in exchange for playing a college sport

just because you CLEARLY put no value on education or being educated (as shown in your "reasoning" for being pro student athlete unions) that does not in fact mean that getting an education paid for along with room and board and tutoring and everything else is not a form of compensation and even worse in your (extremely naive and silly conclusion) it is actually private school students that are compensated MORE than public school students because private school tuition cost a great deal more than public school tuition in almost every situation and the VAST majority of student athletes (and especially the ones that would remotely identify with your conclusion) would never have the brains or intelligence to set foot on a private school campus much less get any type of educational assistance based on actual intelligence

so going to a private school for many student athletes based on athletics means they are MORE than getting compensated VS public school student athletes

good night if you are going to attempt to start a discussion on an issue that has been discussed pretty thoroughly already at least attempt to do so with some very very very small amount of actual intelligence VS just tossing out some silly talking points that barely make sense much less present any type of a logical or factual argument in support of the position you have taken

if you place no value on education and you are in support of those that also place no value on education and waste time, space, air, money and effort on college campuses then at least be honest about that fact and get the hell off of college campuses and out of the college game and go waste time and space and air and money elsewhere......well other than the fact that no one is offering a damn thing to those with "mad skillz" for their "skillz" other than (unfortunately) universities that are offering something that is of no value to many fools with "mad skillz" like the opportunity to get an education that should last a lifetime VS the very very very limited potential to actually make any type of money for their "mad skillz"

RE: Unions?
Maybe an injured college player should just have his scholarship honored. Nothing more. It's risk vs reward. What would happen if the player was injured in high school? Should they be compensated too?

Thats the rub.

I don't generally support the unionization and employee status of players *BUT* there are real issues that the NCAA has not addressed and seems to have no interest in addressing.

All Scholarships should be 4 years regaless of injury, coaching changes, *or* on the field performance. If a Kid makes grades, follows the rules, and practices with the team he should be set.

The unofficial "7 on 7" crap the kids do off season needs to stop. SO should off schedule conditioning and other such "voluntary" exercises.

RE: Unions?
Let find out how great being considered an employee and have a union contract is. I can't wait to see Northwestern have to forfeit games due to a strike. How do you pay retroactive compensation to a player that has already graduated?

Once these kids get a paycheck and see how much is withheld for taxes, ssi, unemployment, union dues they will realize how good they had it before. Oh by the way, as an employee, meals, uniforms, board, medical benefits would all be considered taxable compensation.
