Any place that a coach "struggles" can turn into a "bad career move". Even at an SEC school like Tennessee. Just ask Derek Dooley. 03-cloud9

Yeah, but if he struggles at Tennessee then he could go back to a Louisiana Tech type of job. If he struggles at Louisiana Tech then his next job is in the Patriot league.

Donnie Tyndall will probably be next.

According to a rumor from the Tennessee Rivals correspondent, Tyndall already turned down a $1 million offer.

Jason Munz ‏@munzly 10m
RT @smosswkyt WVLT in Knoxville reporting Southern Miss head coach Donnie Tyndall is meeting with Tennessee today

So now they are offering more. I guess they tried to get him on the cheap earlier.

That's my guess too. Tennessee supposedly has major financial issues (or at least they did a couple of years ago) so the low ball offer doesn't surprise me. I think they'll end up getting Tyndall for around $1.5 million per year. They don't want to pay that much, but they certainly don't want to get publicly spurned again.

Nope, it doesn't work that way. This is about staying with the "Devil you know." Any coach who takes that Tennessee job could easily be out of work in 3 years. (That's exactly what happened to Derek Dooley). At LA Tech, Mike White has a potential Sweet 16 team waiting in the wings. He can ride his 2014-2015 team to the promise land next year, and get a REAL offer that makes this Tennessee offer look paltry.

Don't forget, Mike White is very well connected too. His dad is AD at Duke. He know's exactly what he's doing. This is the smart play.

Not really. What happened to Buzz Peterson? Coastal Carolina.

These guys are smart to be careful. If all Tenn is offering is a mill, that's way too light.

Not to mention that a large chunk of the UT fanbase is still hung up on Bruce Pearl. A petition with several thousand so gathers was delivered to the AD asking him to go and rehire Pearl even though Pearl is now at Auburn...

That UT job is a "damned if you, damned if you don't" proposition right now.

What's the deal with UT looking at Cronin? I can't imagine he'd jump which would be at best a lateral move and imho a downward move. Any Cincy fans think he's really interested?

I really hope that Tyndall spurns them too after a long protracted exchange of offers and rejections! This coaching job is a trap, disgruntled fan base, a wreck of a team to inherit, and look out for the buyout structure as they are afraid of getting burned (not that Tyndall would not be an impressive coach for UT and drag them out of the gutter). Stay at Souther Miss where you will do well and move CUSA up the ladder.

In that case, where is Dooley head coach at now? He's back where he was before Tech hired him...NFL position coach.

True.

OTOH, he could accept the Tennessee job then become the basketball equivalent of Derek Dooley.

La. Tech is supposed to be loaded next year. My honest advice to White would be to stay in Ruston one more year, win the C-USA championship, and then check the lay of the land in April 2015.

RE: Mike White "likely" staying at LaTech
I live in Knoxville and this has been the talk of the weekend here.

Turns out that they had pretty much agreed on everything except the buyout. UT's AD wanted the buyout to be the same for both parties. White wanted a lower buyout if he left on his own.

Word is that White may be angling to be Andy Kennedy's replacement at Ole Miss, whose seat is getting a bit warm.

UT took a bad PR hit with Martin leaving for Cal, but the real story was that he's a crap recruiter and the roster is fairly barren next year. Sweet 16 this year or not, he was living on borrowed time.

The new coach has something of a rebuilding job when it comes to the roster.

I think the roster being bare next season is one reason why White wanted more long term security that the Tennessee AD wouldn't give him

That's my hunch, too.

Of course they at least "looked at" Cronin. Cronin's a good coach...

I said this elsewhere: the schools I would be most nervous about getting involved with Cronin would be "blue-bloods" like UK, Indiana, and Michigan State, or geograpically close teams like OSU and perhaps Butler. Tennessee fits none of those categories. I just don't see Cronin being interested.

The "Cronin to UT" chatter seems to have died off. Most of it came from a poll of Vol's fans on one of their boards. Not too worried right now.

Agreed - Martin left the roster in such poor shape that I think it did affect Tennessee's ability to hire a bigger name coach than Tyndall or White.

Yes, but UT didn't give Cuonzo the resources that Pearl had. Pearl was strong enough to get what he needed, but it's been a long time since any hoops coach not named Summit had any respect there. It's a football school that isn't happy anymore because of the last 10 years of football obscurity.

So enter 2014's dramatic switch to the Nike swoosh to try to turn things around. If I were White, I wouldn't even consider it. There will be much better jobs than UT in his future, assuming he even wants to move on.

that's probably one reason he turned it down

This is not the first time UT-Knoxville has taken a PR hit.

Today's "basketball coach" situation at Tennessee sounds almost identical to the football coaching situation when Derek Dooley took the job back in Dec 2009. At the time, UT fans were very upset because Lane Kiffen left Knoxville to take the USC job. UT fans felt abandoned and demanded justice. And after being rejected by a couple of other would-be coaches, UT finally hired Dooley. They subsequently tuned on Dooley because he wasn't the next Phil Fulmer.

The difference now is, instead of a bitter case of "sellers remorse" from running off legendary football coach Phil Fulmer, UT fans are now remorseful over forcing legendary basketball coach Bruce Pearl out. Instead of Lane Kiffen abandoning UT and going to USC, we're talking about Martin jumping ship for CAL. And instead of Derek Dooley finally taking the head football coaching job after several others rejected it, we're now talking about Donnie Tyndall doing the exact same thing.

The more things change at Tennessee, the more they seem to stay the same.
