In any event, Charlie knocks him in. 5-3.

Now JP calls it a wild pitch. Who knows with JP....nobody on, 0 outs, a grounder to second, double play, inning over! <with excitement>

Insurance!!

Kirby Taylor hits a 1-out single, advances to 2nd on a wild pitch, and scores on Warren's 2-out single. WooHoo!!

5-3 Owls. (Warren squeaked into 2nd on the throw home.)

Looks like some mixed signals with this battery, the catcher is moving one way and reaching another just to stop the pitch.

Indeed! Reeves up with Warren at second: "A high chopper to the left side."

Then nothing. What happened? Fair/foul? Out/safe/error? Geeez.

(Must have been foul, as Reeves continued the AB and struck out to end the inning.)

Really tough luck for Duplantier, who really didn't give up a hard hit-- just ground balls that found holes, along with the muffed chopper to Shane.

Warren with clutch, two-out RBI single, scoring Kirby Taylor who had a one-out, "excuse me" single and moved to 2B on wild pitch! 02-13-banana HUGE.

Good guys take a 5-3 lead into the top of the ninth inning.

I know The OG how much more baseball smarts than me, but...why bring in a guy in that situation, with a critical game on the line, who has had 4 consecutive poor appearances; especially when you have a relatively rested Teykl available?

He has said that he's trying to find another pitcher(s) to step up. I guess you have to give them opps in that case.

Sorry, not in THAT situation with such a critical game on the line.

"THAT situation" = 3 run lead, one out away from ending the threat, against a team you lead by 3.5 games in the conference.

If you're looking to put a guy under pressure to see how he responds, I can't think of a better situation. Even if he fails, you're still likely to be in a good spot. Looks like it's going to work out.

A good series win against UAB! Way to go Owls.

Thank goodness the team that went to Beaumont last Tuesday didn't show up.

Very nice job. I still think that even though we're tied with USM in the loss column and they have an easier remaining schedule, I like our team's chances for conference title #gazillion in a row. It does look pretty apparent to me now that Rice and USM are 1-2 in some order or another, barring a sweep by either team next weekend. USM's 2nd half momentum should help the CUSA tournament attendance, so that's a good thing.

RE: Game Three UAB at Rice
What a job by Trevor to not only end the 8th inning threat on one pitch, but very quickly retire the side in order in the 9th. Well earned save.

Huge win and series sweep, especially after the Lamar embarrassment. Great to see both McCanna and Duplantier step up big time when we needed them most. As for our offense, the less said the better-- as was the case yesterday, this game should have been over by the 3rd or 4th inning-- especially with the wildness of their starting pitcher. For whatever reason, our batters are pressing big time whenever we get runners in scoring position. Thankfully, we did get a couple clutch, late hits by JC and Charlie that proved the difference.

Game Ball #1: Jon Duplantier (W, 1-2, 7.2 IP, 8 hits, 3 runs, 2 BBs, 7 Ks)-- earning his first of what will hopefully be many career wins in what was his breakout performance. 7 shutout innings before tiring...topping out at 94-95 MPH on the gun...limitting the free passes...and doing a very good job holding runners on 1B. With a short bullpen (with Ditman unavailable), we needed Jon to give us quality innings and he came through big time.

Game Ball #2: Trevor Teykl (Save #2, 1.1 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 BBs, 0 Ks)-- came in with the tying and winning run in scoring position and all the momentum on UAB's side, and proceeded to close the game and recording the final 4 outs on about 14 pitches, with no ball making it out of the infield (one pop, 3 ground outs). HUGE.

Game Ball #3: Could have given it to Keenan Cook (3-4, BB, 1 runs scored), but I'm giving it to JC Reeves (1-3, BB, sac bunt, RBI)-- not only for turned out to be the game-winning RBI, but also for his successful sac bunt which resulted in our first run, as well as his game-calling and handling of Duplantier at catcher.

With the back-to-back sweeps of Tulane and UAB, we have retained our 1 1/2 game lead over USM, though we are still even in the loss column. It makes next weekend's showdown in Haittesburg a series for the conference lead-- whomever wins is in the drivers seat with just 3 weeks remaining in the regular season (two for us, given we then go on the 10-day Finals break).

I'm assuming McDowell will be ready to go against the Aggies on Tuesday, a game which is more important as a momentum builder heading into next weekend more than anything else. Go Owls!

Two guys in scoring position with a pitcher who hasn't had a quality outing in a month...and a game that if we lose, we fall a game behind USM in the loss column...who we play next week on the road just before Dead Week (never an easy assignment). Had Teykl thrown more than 1 inning yesterday I could understand it, but Trevor is our #2 bullpen arm at the moment (when Smith, Orewiler and McCarthy have all struggled in their recent appearances), and was relatively well-rested. And from what I understand, he had also been warming up and was ready to go if called upon.

T. Tekyl coming in.

Two batters too late. Really questionable bullpen move with the game on the line.

Perhaps in a perfect world Teykl would have started against A$M?

I have a idea that Wayne might believe in his stuff perhaps more than he does. He knows his team, he would not have put him in a position he didn't think he would succeed.

You also know Graham is all about winning the game you are currently playing, tomorrow may never come.

Major Props to Rice in getting the sweep.

Please squeeze what academics you can in between A$M and the road trip to Southern Mississippi.

In Wayne we trust. However far this team goes this year, I have every confidence that there's no one else on the planet who could take them any farther. RFND!

Head up play by Kirby. Pitch in the dirt didn't get more than 10 feet from the catcher . Good break by Kirby even with our typical secondary lead.

Thanks!

I certainly didn't get that explanation from either the "new and improved" Gametracker or the "ol' reliable" JP.

Did you bring out your secret weapon again Sunday?
