Copperheads
Neighbor has already found two, so be careful out there, especially you folks who don't live in a busy subdivision. I know a lot of you are out my way, and one in my neighborhood, so keep the Benadryl handy in case your dog gets bit.

If you catch one or two, let me know and I'll pick them up. Seriously, I'm not kidding.

RE: Copperheads
Used come across rattlers all the time in Austin while hiking. Scary.

I was at Lake Georgetown once with my then girlfriend just yapping away and noticed the she had stopped walking. Apparently I had stepped over one that was stretched across the trail.

Another time I was at Bull Creek by myself. I heard the rattle go in the bushes in front of me so I slowly baked away. Then I heard another rattle in the bush beside me. I ran like the friggin wind.

Kind of glad to be in Midtown right now. All we have to deal with are owls, hawks, grass snakes and criminals.

Copperheads aren't the worst of it. Last night I heard a coyote pack howling, and there's a horse in my backyard.

Back when I was a kid growing up in Memphis, from the age of 8 all the way to moving out of the house, I had pet Speckled King Snakes that I caught in the woods near the house. Its crazy how they used to be everywhere 30 years ago. When I take my kids to the woods now, we see occasional garter snakes but never and kings.

I'll take my chances with all of the above minus the grass snakes.

Overton Park is loaded with copperheads. One of the largest urban concentrations in the country. Lets hope they don't decide to cross Poplar or the Parkways.

Lots of snakes on the greenline and wolf river trails. Most of the time I just see the copperheads stretched out sunning themselves on the path and I just hop over them. On the Wolf River Trails watch out for the little wet areas and culverts that is Water Moccasin city.

Thankfully the copperheads around here aren't very aggressive.

RE: Copperheads
Copperheads generally aren't aggressive at all. You step on them, they will bite you. Other than that, there aren't a lot of unprovoked human bites. Even though they are venomous, they are a pretty good snake. Eat a ton of mice, rats, moles, voles etc.

Cottonmouths are another story. I've had them chase after me on land and try to jump in a boat. They also have much more potent venom than the copperhead. Horrible creatures. Eat perfectly good fish, turtles, birds, and even eat other snakes. Good one is a dead one.

Same here. They're the only thing I can think of that I would consider to be a phobia. Can't stand to even look at them.

Snakes eat rats, mice, etc. I don't particularly like them but I don't hate them. Non-venomous snakes make the world much better near your house, whether you know it or not. But I get not liking a reptile; I know a few and I don't like them, either.

The only thing I'll add is that this time of year the copperheads are more aggressive than usual because it's mating season; you know how guys can be.
