RE: Attitude
One of the first who might have been identified with "attitude" in the wrestling ring was Gorgeous George (Warner) whose antics influenced the public personnas of Muhammed Ali and James Brown and singer Bob Dylan. His career predated the WWF / WWE and was one of the first to be inducted into any wrestler's Hall of Fame.
As a child, I watched him on (B&W) TV as he would enter the ring wearing garish robes and commence to pull gold hair pins from his blond hair and throw them to women in the ringside crowd before going to his corner.

RE: Attitude
Dad tells stories of how kids in the neighborhood would come over to my grandfather's house on Friday nights to watch wrestling because that was the only tv in the neighborhood.
I think the best period was perhaps the time frame around Wrestlemania 1 to 5, however I still liked watching the local circuits in the late 70's to early 80's.
I recall going to Boutwell to watch a few of the first Wrestlemanias on closed circuit tv.
