UT is looking at Donnie Tnydall of Southern Miss & Richard Pitino of Minnesota to be their next head coach.
No word yet on who has the leg up yet.

Would be a step up from USM but a step down from Minnesota.

Don't think it matters. Reports say Pitino isn't interested (just like Marshall & Smart aren't interested). Look for either Tyndall or Mike White to get the job (UTK fans won't like a CUSA hire). Neither will be the wow hire UTK fans want or expect but either could be a good hire if the fanbase will be patient & give the coach 4-5 years to develop the program. My guess is the fanbase won't like who is hired, won't be patient & the program will continue to be a rollercoaster of mediocrity.

Huh?

They've been in the NCAAs 7 out of the last 9 seasons, Sweet 16 three times and Elite 8 once.

Mediocre?

It is subjective, but SI places UT-K in the "honorable mention" category of top programs. Minnesota is not listed. http://college-basketball.si.com/2013/09...-programs/

I also read ESPN assigning the Vols the 4th best job in the SEC. The Gophers ranked 8th in their league.

Right.

The article also says this about UT. " There isn’t a tremendous legacy of success in the program’s past," The conference name and the large arena is all the HM is based on. BB budget 9th in conference.

Yes mediocre. 6 of those 7 NCAA appearances were under one coach who cheated and got fired. Aside from that short span in UTK's history they have been on a roller coaster of mediocrity.

And 4th best BB program in the SEC says very little when the SEC only had 1 BB program since 1932 until UF hired their current coach. Pitino must agree since he is staying at the 8th best B1G program (considered by many the best BB conference in the nation) rather than "move up" to the 4th best SEC program considered the worst BB conference in the power 5.

The 4th best job in the SEC = the 8th best job in the Big10. Or since Pitino told them to pound sand, you could make the argument that the 4th best job in the SEC < the 8th best job in the Big10. The SEC is awful right now.

For some reason, UTK fans have always believed they deserve to be in the top tier without ever having earned it (or the second tier, for that matter). The off season will always be the best part of the year for UTK basketball fans.

UT is a better job. Since 2000 they've been to 4 16's and an 8, also been ranked #1. Minnesota only made the tournament 4 times in that period, winning only 1 game. The SEC is a conference where perception is possibly ahead of reality and a good coach could come in and compete for a top 4 spot early on. Tubby found out how hard it is to compete in the Big 10. UT is better and it isn't all that close.

Well, if you are going to judge the history of a program by a small window of success, then that means Memphis football is a great job. We went to 4 bowls in a 5 year span not that long ago.

Tennessee plays in a really weak conference and they have an AD that tries to hire all their BB coaches on the cheap. Their basketball will always play second fiddle to their football. But other than that, it's a great job.

You can be biased if you want, I don't care. It's ridiculous to compare the last 15 years of the UT basketball program to a small run our football team had years ago. It's also dumb to compare making sweet 16s and elite 8s to making low tier bowl games. I told you how the weaker conference helps it be a better job but you ignored that. Minny plays in a conference where they would have to leapfrog Michigan, OSU, Sparty and Wisconsin. UT, as we saw this year, has a much smaller hurdle to climb to being in the top portion of their conference.

The big problem with basketball in the SEC is it's basically known as a two team conference. Sadly, when UTK goes after a coach, they have to draw them out of D2 or the equivalent. You have to be patient with those guys and, even so, you're rolling the dice on how good they'll be at a lower D1 level.
