Rice vs. UAB (Friday Game 1)
The OG really juggling the lineup tonight...

Quote:Rice Baseball‏@RiceOwlsBSB·23 mins
Starting lineup for the Owls tonight: Cook rf; Warren cf; Reeves c; Ewing 1b; Hoelscher 3b; Teykl 2b; Fox dh; Aquino lf; Stainback ss

...with Blake Fox getting a rare start at DH (instead of McDowell). Slow-tossing right-hander we're facing; meaning we need to go the opposite field against him if we're to be successful.

RE: Rice vs. UAB (Friday Game 1)
Quick 1-2-3 inning for Kevin (3 ground balls), with a couple nice defensive plays by Stainback.

Cook pop out to SS on 3-1 count.
Warren first pitch lined single. Runner on 1B, one out.
Reeves foul pop to 1B. Ugh. UAB did their scouting-- theyre playing our right-hand hitters to pull, leaving big hole on right side.
Ewing flied out to short LF.
Three pop outs could mean we're over-swinging against Mallard's slow stuff. Take what he gives you.

Scoreless heading to the top of the second inning.

RE: Rice vs. UAB (Friday Game 1)
Another very quick 1-2-3 inning for Kevin (two ground outs, strikeoutK). Very low pitch count so far. Keep it up!

Hoelscher leadoff double (one hop to the wall). Let's execute here. Need to hit this ball to the right side.
Teykl first pitch line shot with great diving catch by SS. Again, should be going to the right side on that.
Fox first pitch pop to SS. Ugh. Once again, we fail to move leadoff runer-- the story of this season. Awful situational hitting continues.
(Apparently, Chase McDowell is under the weather, which is why he's not starting at DH.)
Aquino struck out swinging. Same old, same old. Can we just once, shorten your swing with an 0-2 count?
Wasting a leadoff double.

Scoreless heading to the top of the third inning.

RE: Rice vs. UAB (Friday Game 1)
Kevin continues to pitch well, despite giving up two hits (ground ball up the middle, bunt where noone covered 1B after Ewing fielded the ball), stranding runners on 2B and 3B (two ground outs, strikeoutKK). Is it possible for this offense to score a run without 3 hits?

Stainback first pitch leadoff double! Can we PLEASE do some executing and situational hitting. Let's not let this pitcher off the hook again. If we don't bunt, then Keenan should try to pull the ball to the right side.
Cook gets the bunt down successfully. Well done. Runner on 3B, one out. Need to put this ball in play-- anywhere.
Warren struck out looking on 3 pitches. Just unbelievable. Our strikeout rate with runner on 3B is incredibly high. Awful fundamental baseball.
Reeves clutch, first pitch, opposite field RBI single! 02-13-banana Excellent piece of hitting; going the opposite way.
Ewing flied out to deep LF.

Good guys take a 1-0 lead heading to the top of the fourth inning.

Kevin gives up a one-out texas-league, bloop single, but he's quickly doubled up on a line drive to Ewing.

Hoelscher struck out swinging.
Teykl ground out to 2B.
Fox ground single. Runner on 1B, two outs.
Fox advances to 2B on E-1 on pickoff attempt.
Aquino flied out.

Good guys lead 1-0 heading to the top of the fifth inning.

Ford is looking really good tonight at SS. Nice backhand stop and strong throw to open the T5.

Another 1-2-3 inning by Kevin (ground out, strikeoutKKK, soft liner). Let's add some insurance runs.

Stainback pop up to SS. That's our 6th infield pop of the game.
Cook two-strike single. Runner on 1B, one out. How about a hit and run here...
Warren missed hit and run, with Cook thrown out at 2B. Ugh, but at least we tried to make something happen....single up the middle. Really nice AB by Charlie, as he fouled off around 4 - 5 pitches before getting the single.
Reeves struck out.
We're hitting Mallard, but continuously letting him off the hook. This game is too reminiscent of the Friday game against Hoffman and ECU. Hopefully, a different outcome this time.

Good guys lead 1-0 heading to the top of the sixth inning.

Kevin does a great job of pitching around a couple of hits in T6. Still 1-0 Owls going to B6

And Ewing with a leadoff single!

And Shane is HBP trying to get the Sac down. Connor walks and Blake brings home one with a sac fly to CF.

UAB has plenty if trick plays. Crazy wheels/pickoffs, outfield decoys on fly balls

None have worked so far

RE: Rice vs. UAB (Friday Game 1)
Great pitching by Kevin-- gave up another two cheap singles (one infield, one just barely through infield on perfectly executed hit and run)...but left the runners stranded on 1B and 2B (foul bunt, strikeoutKKKK, pop out).

Ewing lined leadoff single! Now let's execute.
Hoelscher hit by pitch while squaring around to bunt. Runners of 1B and 2B, no outs. Gotta bunt here.
Teykl walked to load the bases with no outs. Need the sac fly, but force him to throw strikes.
Fox first pich sac fly! 02-13-banana Well done! Runners on 1B and 2B, one out.
Aquino flied out to CF.
Stainback struck out.
One run, but our inefficiency continues as that's all we get from a bases loaded, no outs situation.

Good guys lead 2-0 heading to the top of the seventh inning.

Nice running catch by Keenan to hold a runner at 1st then lazy fly ball to end the T7. 2-0 Owls going to the stretch.

Kevin gives up a one-out ground single, but that's it, thanks to a great catch by Cook in RF (soft infield liner, line out, fly out).

Cook struck out swinging.
Warren ground out to 2B.
Reeves hit by pitch. Runner on 1B, two outs.
Ewing 2-0 pop up to SS. Skyler has been off the past couple weeks.

Good guys lead 2-0 heading to the top of the eighth inning.

Is JP broadcasting tonight? No radio feed in the concourse.

Make that Internet feed.

Walk and sac bunt has Shane at 2B with one out. Blake's at the plate. And he strikes out. Ugly AB. Aquino up which triggers another mound conference.

Didn't work. Michael gets int BB after getting ahead 2-0. Ford up.

Ford walks on 5 pitches. Time for a change? I guess not. Keenan up and grounds out 6U.

On to 9th. Owls up 2-0.

RE: Rice vs. UAB (Friday Game 1)
Kevin continues to impress. Allows a two-out E-6, followed by single, but left them stranded. I believe his pitch count is right around 90 - 93. The OG will probably let him start the 9th, with Ditman ready if anyone reaches base.

Sr RHP Cameron Rose (4.61 ERA, .357 BAA) now in for UAB. This guy is NOT very good...
Hoelscher leadoff walk. Come on, guys-- execute and manufacture an insurance run.
Teykl lays down sac bunt. Runner on 2B, one out. Well done.
Fox struck out on 3 pitches. Once again, we fail to put the ball in play to move the runner. Just awful situational hitting.
Aquino intentionally walked. Strange given how bad Michael has been hitting of late. Runners on 1B and 2B, two outs.
Stainback walked to load the bases with two outs. Let's be patient here and force him to throw consecutive strikes.
Cook first pitch ground out. WHY do you swing at the first pitch after he's walked 3 batters and hasn't even been close to the strikezone? Stupid. We continue to help opposing pitchers time and time again.

Good guys take a 2-0 lead into the top of the ninth inning.
