Fort Pillow alone should have been enough to dangle that slave-trading piece of **** from the end of a rope.
I researched Fort Pillow quite a bit years ago. What happened there was a tragedy. But the story is not as simple as the capsule histories would lead one to believe. Circumstances prevented any orderly surrender of the post. It appears that Forrest ultimately intervened to stop the fight himself.
Forrest is ultimately responsible as commander of his unit for what occurred but I've found nothing to indicate an intention to commit an atrocity.

Not necessarily, but you could be perceived to be, depending on the environment.
So any time a radical group bastardizes a symbol in our society we should ban it?

No.
OK. I can't speak for anyone else who flies that flag, but I know it serves no racial meaning to me.
I see this one around here a lot. I've got plenty of friends like this and they care way too much about fishing and being outdoors to worry about what race you are.

So you right-wing supporters of the confederate battle flag have no problem at all with Americans of Mexican origin displaying the Mexican flag as a representation of their heritage?

I'm a Libertarian actually.
As to your question, I attend Scottish festivals and enjoy them, and there are plenty of Scottish flags.
But at the same time I don't align politically as a Scotsman or agitate to get my kids in kilts at school, or expect their lessons in Gaelic, or vote with a Scottish bloc, etc.
I also like Mexican food places, have Pinatas at birthday parties, and like to see girls in those Mexican dresses.

RE: 7 Students @ Washington & LEE demand removal of Confederate Flags
So UM, your question is invalid. The Mexican flag is not a flag from this country. I personally don't like seeing it because it usually represents reconquista... and racist organizations like La Raza...which is pretty sad that liberals like you support those causes. There is nothing more un American that supporting a cause aimed at taking back portions of our country through demographic warfare...which is what is happening in the southwest...but I know you liberals love it.
That being said, they have a right to display that flag in certain context just like any other flag. It's illegal for me to put up a rebel flag above an American flag, just as it is illegal to put up a Mexican flag above and American flag.

I interviewed there several years ago for a faculty opening, and found their students and faculty to be largely out of touch with reality. That being said, I didn't find anything there to be glorifying the Confederacy. Lee Chapel certainly honors Robert E. Lee as a significant historical figure. In that historical context, I didn't find anything about the Confederate flags to be offensive or even distasteful. I would admonish these students learn that the censoring of history is a sure route to repeat it.
