Are we not receiving an equal share of the NCAA Basketball credits?

(04-17-2014 10:54 AM)Marge Schott Wrote:  Notre Dame and Louisville fans, what is the valuation breakdown between cash and merchandise? In past years 75-100% of the yearly "revenue" was nothing more than free athletic apparel for the school's teams. I have to assume with figure in the $8-9M/year range that ND, UL and Michigan are receiving 50/50 splits, or more.

EDIT: I see Michigan was already making $3.8M/year in cash to $2.2M/year in apparel prior to re-upping with Adidas.

"Notre Dame and Under Armour announced Tuesday that they have agreed to the most valuable shoe and apparel contract in college sports history.

The private school did not reveal the value of the 10-year deal, which will begin when its contract with adidas expires at the end of June, but sources told ESPN.com that the value of the deal, in cash and merchandise combined, is worth about $90 million.

That would make the deal worth more than the $82 million adidas is paying in cash and product to Michigan over 10 years.

"Notre Dame and Under Armour have agreed to a 10-year deal worth $90 million in cash and merchandise combined, according to sources, that makes it the richest shoe and apparel deal in college sports.
The deal could eventually be worth even more to the Fighting Irish, as Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick noted that it allows the school to take some of the cash in company stock.

As of 12:30 p.m. ET Tuesday, shares of Under Armour were up more than 3 percent on the day and up more than 80 percent over last year."

http://espn.go.com/college-football/stor...aa-history

"Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick called the deal “the largest financial commitment ever made by a brand to a university,” but the specific terms of the agreement weren’t released. Given that adidas — which had been providing the Irish with shoes since 1997 and apparel since 2001 — inked a then-record $8.2 million-per-year deal with Michigan in ’08, Monte Burke over at Forbes estimates that Notre Dame’s deal approaches the $100 million mark over 10 years, if not more, while ESPN's Darren Rovell says it's worth about $90 million.

So the short-term victory for both Notre Dame and Under Armour is clear: The Irish get a boost from their last adidas agreement (reportedly $60 million over 10 years) while setting the market for apparel contracts in college sports, and UA nets the second-most valuable college football program in the country (and its only school in the top 10), according to Forbes.

I wouldn't expect any Nike schools to surpass you. Nike pays crap. They just signed Tennessee for $4M/year.

I think it's standard to allow schools the ability to take a hire contract offer from another company if a formal offer is made by a 2nd apparel company within a pre-determined time period that's written into the contract. Right of first refusal kind of stuff, yea?

Totally ignoring the company/person you're talking about.

RE: Louisville Renews with Adidas for 5 years $40 Million....
Quote:U of L athletic director Tom Jurich said the deal is quite a departure from when he started in 1997.

"When I first got here, nobody wanted to try to brand us," Jurich said at a news conference Thursday. "For every two pair of retail shoes we bought, they gave us the third item 20 percent off."

Where it ranks

Here are some of the largest contracts between sports apparel companies and Division I athletics programs:

1. Notre Dame: $9 million (Under Armour)

2. Michigan: $8.2 million (adidas)

3. Louisville: $7.8 million (adidas)

4. UCLA: $7.7 million (adidas)

5. Kansas: $6.1 million (adidas)

Sources: Portland (Ore.) Business Journal and ESPN

How adidas money is distributed

Contract extension: Five years, $39 million

Cash: $.7.7 million, or $1.54 million per year

U of L's footwear, uniforms and accessories for all 23 athletic programs will be provided by adidas. Louisville football will have five different uniforms, with "dozens" of combinations with helmet options. Men's and women's basketball teams "will continue to have three or four" uniforms with a postseason uniform, too.

In addition to uniforms and apparel, deal invests in advertising, equipment room expansion, digital/video technology, spirit squads and athletics department/adidas internships for 20 to 23 students who wish to work in branding and marketing.

So basically it sounds like U of L gets $1.54M/year in cash and $7.65M/year in free uniforms, shoes, etc. That sounds like another "uniform of the week" sort of deal (gotta have lots of new unis to spend that much every year)

Pretty sure Pitino and Petrino get a chunk of that money. A big chunk.

There is also upfront cash for enlarging the equipment room (I guess to hold all the new uniforms )

Funds for 20-23 internships in the athletics department for careers in branding and marketing.

Uniforms and support for spirit groups (cheerleaders, etc.)

Fan freebies for next season's ACC home games

But yeah, most of the value is in "funny money", e.g. sponsorships, promotions, merchandise, etc.

Here's one of the more complete articles about it.

Probably charging retail price on all uniforms and apparel and not wholesale to make it look bigger. But $1.54M/year in cash is still a good amount when comparing nationally. Probably top 15. It's always nice to get new uniforms for cheerleaders, the band, or whomever ("spirit groups" might also mean things like free t-shirts for student sections at games). And signing bonuses to construct new buildings is always nice. Nike gave FSU $1-2M several years ago to construct a human performance center in our track building. I think it's just a fancy word for a new training room, but it's appreciated.

Sounds like a poor reason to sign with Adidas, but I also wonder what makes Adidas better than Nike or any other brand for soccer.

One of the things I have heard for years is that not all deals provide for all sports -- some just do the major sports of FB and BB. Addias provides for ALL of UL's sports, which is a big reason why TJ has stayed with them for 15 years.

These sorts of things torpedo the only point of GT being with Russel .... $$$. That $20m for 10 years looks pretty sad just 6 years in.

Another reason why I am glad it only a 5 year deal...around year 4 the others across the Country will be up and Louisville will be able to keep up

^ This.

Nike was willing to outfit the football and men's basketball teams for a significantly smaller contract. However, the school would be responsible for outfitting all of the other teams. As uldn pointed out above, the biggest reason Jurich has stayed with Adidas is because they equipment all of our sports programs.
