RE: Future Mid-Atlantic FBS Conference
UMass, JMU and maaaaybe Delaware are the only ones who would go in. Navy and Temple aren't leaving the American. Buffalo isn't leaving the MAC. Army would stay independent. Villanova had a football home in the first Big East if they wanted it. W&M and Richmond aren't moving up. Theoretically Towson could try to move up, but that still keeps you well short of where you want to be.

W&M is closer to the Patriot than they are to ever moving back up. So is Richmond.

Appy would likely be interested, and possibly ODUh if they realize how awful the travel is in CUSA.

Perhaps in the abstract, but the likely layout would not be enticing for most established FBS programs or even emerging ones in established conferences, including ODU and App. The only full FBS program that would jump at it is UMass. Everyone else would be happy where they are, at least for the foreseeable future.

Think of what it takes to start a conference, you need a staff, offices, marketing and some startup money. There wouldn't be any bowl tie-ins, no NCAAs, no media deals, and no P5 pay-outs.

RE: Future Mid-Atlantic FBS Conference
UConn needs to leave the American before anything can happen......no one is leaving that conference right now.

A better line-up would be:

UMass
Buffalo
Marshall
JMU
ODU
Charlotte

All other viable schools are in better conferences that they are NOT leaving.

I have to say, if hen fans think this is gonna happen they are more delusional than I have previously thought. It just ain't in the cards.

Perhaps this kind of bizzarro thinking is what's holding UD back from joining JMU in approaching the MAC...if so, wow...just wow.

Mashall's not ditching its current set up for Buffalo and a bunch of FBS start ups... 07-coffee3

Not now, certainly. But if those FBS start ups actually succeed, playing the likes of FAU, FIU, Louisiana Tech and UTSA won't be as appealing if they can play schools better and closer. If this ever happens, it's a minimum 10 years away.

you will see discussion of the following potential futute Mid-Atlantic FBS Conference:

Now, maybe this (UMass' withdrawal from MAC) might open the door for a new FBS conference.

UMass- from MAC
Temple- from AAC
Navy- from AAC
Army-Independent
JMU- CAA
UR-CAA
Villanova-CAA
UD- CAA
Buffalo-MAC
W&M-CAA

Seems like a viable conference, close proximity, probable rivalries, close enough academics.

UMass contacted UD a bit ago gauging interest in a newly formed Mid Atlantic conference

Hahahahahaha. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the room for Buffalo, Temple or Navy proposing this to their board of whatevers "Guys, guys, guys...we have this amazing opportunity to leave our conference and play football against 5 FCS schools and two of the worst FBS schools!. This is a can't miss opportunity!"

Well Temple and Navy fans would laugh it off. But for Buffalo? Look our Alumni exist in two places. 1-Western New York and 2-From Boston to DC...

I'm not saying UB would make any such move but you can bet there would be *some* alumni who would love to see more of the Bulls on the East coast..

A new east coast conference would likely be a reorganization if the CUSA and SBC into more regional conferences; but unless something dramatic happens, I don't see it happening. The op is just silly.

A better idea would be to join the Sun Belt and in five years CUSA and SBC realize they can compete collectively vs. one another and form tighter conferences.

ODU
JMU
App
UNCC
Marshall
WKU
MTSU
GSU
GA St.
FIU
FAU
Troy

UAB
USA
S. Miss
Ark St.
LA Tech
ULM
ULL
Texas St.
UTSA
Rice
N. Texas
UTEP

But this is logical and therefore will never happen.

If the 4 major conferences do break away in the manner that has been bandied bout over the last year (and the AAC attempts to follow), I could see something like this happening in order for the lower levels of FBS to remain relevant. A sort of football NIT (or maybe more accurately, a college level AFL)

Don't forget about the AAC. Once Uconn is gone (which will happen), the AAC is just slightly better than these two conferences with a comical geographic footprint.

I wouldn't think so.

However if the G5 conferences formed four geographically friendly conferences down the road there could be a mini-playoff between those four to determine two teams that make BCS playoff. 5 AQ, these 2, plus 1 at-large.

This scenario will never happen because of the top 5-10 programs that are outside of the AQ conferences will be hurt by it.
