Led Muskegon Big Reds to a mythical state championship in 1951, and Spartans to Rose Bowl triumph on New Years' Day, 1956.

Played for the Loins from '58-'64.

He also cut off his big toe with a lawn mower and still was able to play. I used his story as the basis for trying to convince my doctor to remove my own toe. After two toe joint replacements, a broken plate, and a fusion I wanted to be done with it. I figured if Earl could do it, so could I. Doc disagreed. I was chicken to do it the way Earl had it done.

Lost a big toe and played with a pulled loin for 6 seasons?
Wow. I understand why he was a pocket passer and not a scrambler.

I really admire the way he went about his business. Very Professional, very team first. A great role model for any athlete.

He was a great role model. Period. Very humble and a nice man by all accounts.
