Heinicke Speed vs. Linebackers Speed
Does anybody have the inside scoop on what Taylor Heinicke’s 40-yard dash time was this winter? In his article on the spring game, Harry Minium alluded to Heinicke’s 40-yard dash speed being faster than any quarterback at the NFL combine this year. Johnny Manziel ran a 4.56 at the combine, so I have to assume that TH was faster than Manziel with a time likely at somewhere between 4.5 and 4.55. That would be a slight improvement over the mid time of 4.64 currently being posted for TH on NFLdraftscouts.com (where his low time is posted at 4.54).
By the way, according to nfl.com, the two fastest linebacker speeds at the combine this year were 4.65 (Buffalo’s Khalil Mack) and 4.66 (UCLA’s Anthony Barr). Based on that, it seems pretty clear that Heinicke will continue to beat linebackers to the first yard marker this year in C-USA, just as he has for the past three years.
I can’t wait for September. GO MONARCHS!

One thing to keep in mind is linebackers usually have the angle, so that makes up for speed discrepancies. However, I agree C-USA shouldn't really stop him on the ground

The thing about TH is his uncanny sense of when to run and how far he has to go to make the first down marker. He seems to consistently safely make it out of bounds, just north of the yardage needed, either that or he safely slides, again just across the line of gain for the first down. His speed is deceptive, and he knows how and when to use it.
