There was also a OL on the sideline from UNC named Nick Appel http://m.goheels.com/mobile/ViewArticle....97664&

Some of the recruits seemed surprised by the number of transfers in the building. Seems like Withers has no plans on waiting to fill our holes. Should make for a very competitive summer.

Good luck to this young man, but if it's this player, I hope he's developed his speed if he expects to play WR. Crips, I think we have players on the OL that run a 4.85.

I'm assuming he is also a transfer from a prep school? No telling as yet if he's a preferred walk-on or partial scholarship, but apparently based on ESPN reports he did not receive much love coming out of High School in 2013.

How many open scholarships do we have? I didn't think we had that many, so we're either planning on losing some more or starting a transition next year and adding 11 scholarships.

Then again, we may have enough open to do that, as I'm not sure of the actual numbers.

This is my take on available scholarships.

We likely filled most of the open 'ships that were available due to players using up their eligibility. Probably kept a few open due to the likelihood of a few OSU guys or guys that Withers recruited at one time will follow him to JMU.

But we've also had a significant amount of defections since Withers began workouts/ Spring ball. So now there are those scholarships available too- likely a mix of full and partial rides. My concern is with the late signing of high schoolers ( in particular, guys who really had no other significant offers). Maybe you'll use them for practice depth. Maybe it's possible to polish them up to FCS standards if they are truly under the radar. However, if we have aspirations of moving to the FBS level, I'd rather not be saddled with a bunch of guys that no other FBS school thought was worthy of a scholarship.

RE: Sounds like there are a lot of players coming outside of signing day
I work with TJ Bruces mom, and they are a great family. He was just accepted into JMU this week after prep school. He was looked at by WVU, Boston College wth a possible offer from Buffalo. William and Mary was about to offer, but filled their need for wide recievers. He was also talking with the old coaching staff.

They are excited about JMU football and glad he is aboard.02-13-banana

They are giving partial scholarships. Information I heard was they were running low on available scholarship funds.

You can't just give them away to give them away to guys who nobody else wants. I'd much rather get a couple potentially impact transfers than a bunch of guys who can't really compete.

In FCS you have 63 full to give to 85 players. Therefore, a little over 40 get a full ride and a little over 40 get partial's. Its been this way for a long time.

Personally I feel that they are not throwing out scholarships to just anybody. The staff has to see some talent. I was excited about Thougood and Cosh as transfers but that did not work out well. You really dont know what you get from kids until they get here.

Well, I'd rather not burn scholarships on players who NOBODY else wanted. Cosh coming to JMU never made any sense. Thorougood was just a mess from a health perspective. You don't just take a transfer because of the name of the school he was at. You take him for a reason.

Thoroughgood had talent he just couldn't stay healthy, Cosh suffered from Mickey ball. He may well fit the offense that Whiters is gong to install. They were both good athletes, just not in the right time and place to JMU's dismay.

When I said Cosh didn't make sense I meant he didn't fit into the system we were running at the time.
