Big news at ECU, non athletic
It is official now, the long road and battle is over! ECU wins again, ECU now has a College of Engineering and Technology!!!

http://www.ecu.edu/news/engineeringandtechnology.cfm

Take that State, NCSU fought hard for years to prevent it, state champs again 03-nutkick.

"A new master's degree in biomedical engineering within the college also was approved. Biomedical engineering focuses on improving medical systems to enhance human health, including prosthetics and medical devices and instruments. The program includes collaboration with ECU Brody School of Medicine faculty."

“Our new name will provide the college and the university with greater visibility for prospective students and faculty, it will enhance our opportunities to secure external research funding, increase economic development opportunities and more accurately identify the programs in the college,” said David White, dean of the College of Engineering and Technology. “I also believe employers will be more likely to look to ECU and the college for their future employees and leaders.”

".......ECU engineering students can choose from five possible concentrations — biomedical engineering, bioprocess engineering, electrical engineering, industrial and systems engineering and mechanical engineering."

This huge for ECU and the programs, greater visibility, more research money, the list goes on.

Props to ECU.

This is awesome. We will prove people wrong at the American. We have nothing to lose. We will make our own names known.

One step at a time, you don't realize how things work here in NC. This has been in the works for about 15 years. We have to get approval from the BOG and the state house. Just like with our Med School limits have been written in to law. It is state law what we can offer and what we can't. There is a reason our Med School is ranked in the top 20 in primary care, that is the focus of the school, by law. Things like this take 10+ years of fighting those ACC school to get done.

Engineering is a fairly recent addition to the degree programs at ECU. It isnt as established as NCSU's or other schools so the fact that we offer what we do is amazing in itself but now that this has happened then the sky is the limit to what we can offer and the type of students we can attract. State was really against us even having any type of engineering program/degree.

If the AAC schools only knew the battles we have had to fight then they would understand why we have a chip. Especially Houston, USF. Mem, Temple, Cincy, & SMU. ECU though is under UNC's BOG umbrella.

I'll never understand how institutions of higher education can advocate against the expansion of new programs at other universities...especially in subjects like medicine.

My friends that were in dental school at UNC when the ECU dental school was trying to get off the ground claimed a lack of dental faculty was their biggest objection to ECU getting a dental school, but I've always felt that was total b.s. and that the real reason was they didn't want state funds that would otherwise be going to UNC to be going to ECU.

Besides, when has a lack of faculty stopped UNC from having "classes" before. Rimshot

That makes no sense (no surprise coming from Chapel Hell), why even hire a faculty if there is no program for them to work?

Well, I think what they meant was that UNC (and other dental schools) had trouble filling all their dental school faculty vacancies so it was a bad idea to add a whole new dental school.

Great news ECU.

This proves my point that basic economic, regional and demand realities will eventually win out over autocratic domination by 1 or 2 schools.

We flat out don't have computer engineering, though a lot of schools use electrical as a substitute.

Network Engineering and Software Engineering are in another department (Technology and Computer Science).

It's pretty easy to understand actually. I was once a pharmaceutical rep and if my company had the market locked on a certain heart medication drug, do you think they'd want another company to come along and roll out a new and improved version, even if would help millions of people around the world that couldn't use our product for various reasons, (side effects, availability etc.)?? The answer is NO. BTW, Great job ECU! Keep on trying to grow despite all the road blocks thrown up in the state by certain universities!04-cheers

That's great news ECU.

Your not the only university that has difficulties with other state schools.

You can win battles over time.

IMO, this will rank up there with the Med School victory. Engineering is a big money profession. They need to keep their foot on the gas.

Easy. The "business" of higher education is one of the most exclusive and arrogant that there is. It operates like an elite country club / good ol' boy network. If you can get away with having a monopoly you do it, plain and simple.

The college of Technology and Computer science is being renamed to the College of Engineering and Technology. Network Engineering is part of Information Technology & Networking (ICTN).

Makes you wonder how many cures or better medicines are really out there that are being sat on because of greed.

Patent trolls, or hypothetical patent issues, are a bigger bane on the advancement of science.
