The two aren't close.

And I honestly don't see this announcement being at all "Big news". Much less one that deserves its own post (outside of it being the slow off season).

It's pretty easy to understand actually. I was once a pharmaceutical rep and if my company had the market locked on a certain heart medication drug, do you think they'd want another company to come along and roll out a new and improved version, even if would help millions of people around the world that couldn't use our product for various reasons, (side effects, availability etc.)?? The answer is NO. BTW, Great job ECU! Keep on trying to grow despite all the road blocks thrown up in the state by certain universities!04-cheers

Makes you wonder how many cures or better medicines are really out there that are being sat on because of greed.

Patent trolls, or hypothetical patent issues, are a bigger bane on the advancement of science.

? I don't understand your response?

Then you don't know how long they've been fighting to have the name included in the college and how hard NC State fought to prevent them from having even a department of Engineering, let alone a college. Read the release and see what the name means. Engineering is as strong an undergrad program as you'll find and ECU's program has been growing a rapid pace. Its a big deal.

Easy. The "business" of higher education is one of the most exclusive and arrogant that there is. It operates like an elite country club / good ol' boy network. If you can get away with having a monopoly you do it, plain and simple.

Yeah, you got that right. These people call themselves "educators" and consider themselves "above the fray" but they're just as greedy and power-hungry as anyone in the private sector. They don't want anyone possibly infringing on their prestige and influence. UCF got a LOT of opposition from UF and USF and others when we tried to get our medical school off the ground.
