Ice Creamgate
A New York school district apologized after it held an ice cream party for third- through sixth-graders who took the Common Core language arts exams, but excluded the children whose parents opted out of the controversial education standards.

Arkport Central School District in Arkport, N.Y., spent much of the last week answering questions about the disparate treatment, fending off what the school’s chief called “ugly” comments on social media and drawing a big crowd at the education board meeting Wednesday night, according to WLEA-AM.

One parent even labeled it “ice cream gate.”

I wonder if the whole "-gate" suffix thing will just keep going on forever (it's been around for 40 years already), or will there come a point where people forget about it and move on to something else.

Gordon Liddy and John Dean, look what you started!

There was never a Clintongate, I mean there was, but the MSM all but ignored it. The "vast right wing conspiracy" got more news coverage.

Geraldo Rivera called it "zippergate" for a while.

The etymology of colloquialisms tend to fade away over time. I’m guessing most
people that use the term “Luddite” have no idea who Ned Ludd was or that “Drinking
the Kool-Aid
” is associated with Jonestown (although Flavor Aid was probably used)

Very true.

True again.

I think most people -- at least, most adults 35+ -- have at least some faint cognizance that "-gate" is somehow connected to the Nixon era. The Jonestown disaster (1978) is actually of more recent vintage than the Watergate break-ins (note the plural, kids!) (1972), yet the expression "drinking the Kool-Aid" seems almost totally disconnected from the event which spawned it. I have some friends who lived in Guyana in those days and they are still stunned by the magnitude of what happened there.
