Sets up the final- Union College (2100 students) vs. Minnesota (51,000+ students). Union has only one DI sport- hockey. Not sure how they are able to do that. Minnesota has 23 DI sports and 5 National Championships in hockey. I have a good friend who is a Union graduate, lives in nearby Delaware, and was at the games tonight in Phili.

I am sure that the limited pool of schools in hockey creates some different situations. Same in lacrosse, where Johns Hopkins is a powerhouse. Their official site says: "The NCAA began sponsoring the men’s lacrosse championship in 1971 and Johns Hopkins has since won nine national championships under the NCAA’s banner."

According to my friend, Union does not give athletic scholarships. Minnesota has 18 scholarships to give out. They have 11 championship game appearances (and 5 national titles) to Union's zero. It would be a great story if Union could win. I certainly think they have a shot, despite the odds. A hot goalie can make up for a lot of other things.

Yeah, I had to triple check that. There is an exception for hockey because there is no D2 Hockey Championship. Basically everyone can play D1 if they want

Union wins 7-4. It truly was David over Goliath when you consider that Minnesota had 16 players taken in the NHL Draft, and Union none.

Another "Miracle on Ice". My friend just called me from the arena. Doesn't have much of a voice left. Says the Minnesota folks are in shock.
