This Is Why a Pro Team Is So Good For My Hometown City
of MEMPHIS

for nights like this

whether or not we make the playoffs, there is an undeniable excitement in the city and surrounding areas regarding an honest to goodness major professional sports franchise

And no one can take that away

I grew up in Memphis as a huge Tiger fan, but always pined for the NFL - this experience is not a bad consolation prize

Happy for you K2. But the NBA is atrocious in my personal opinion.

Go Griz, win one for K2!

I'd much rather have an NBA team...NFL, MLB, NHL won't work here IMHO.

understand....

and you're not alone - I don't like the NBA either any more - I sure did when I lived in Chicago for 8 years during Michael time -

but, I get it.....that's why I attended every single NFL preseason game that Memphis ever put on in the hopes that we would get an NFL team...it was never meant to be

MLB would work here but again like it read with the Grizzled game to put a great product on the field.

I mean shoot when AutoZone opened the first 3 or 4 seasons Redbirds wetter one of the tops in attendances.

Being so close to St. Louis though is what would hurt because a lot of the baseball fans in Memphis are cardinals fans

Doesn't hurt that it was on ESPN either. Incredible promotion for our city. We also seem to always play well on ESPN.

let's face it folks -

Memphis is lucky to even have a major pro sports team...

even back in the day when all the focus was on the NFL pursuit, one Avron Fogelman said that Memphis would be a better NBA city than an NFL city.....and I think he's right

Totally agree K2. Even Billy Dunavant said the same after the NFL chase ended that pro hoops would work here. Things definitely aligned back in 01 to bring the Griz here. We were lucky for sure. Bout time I would say. This past month the promotion the city got on 4 Grizzlies ESPN games was priceless. I love the fact we were also 4-0. I heard ESPN picked up our last game vs Dallas next Wednesday also. Phoenix has to lose eventually, don't they?

it's not that the NBA is atrocious, it's that the coverage/promotion/media etc. is atrocious.it's all about promotion and coverage of the superstars and big market teams instead of the entire league.

last night's game got the first spot of coverage on sportscenter after the masters, but all it was about was LeBron and how the loss affects the Heat and if LeBron is "conceding" the MVP to Durant.

nothing about the Grizzlies shutdown D in the 2nd half, Gasol's amazing passes or ZBo tying a franchise record for shots made in the 1st qtr.

right

the NBA is also one of the 3 major pro sports leagues that Memphis is a part of - quite a select group

for me, it's not about the sport per se; it's about CIVIC pride, and the wonderful PR Memphis receives because of it -could care less whether that's the NBA, NFL or MLB

I want the Grizz to do well...but I've been a Mavs fan since they came into the league.
So one of my teams is already looking at a playoff slot.
I do hope the Grizz make it in.

I don't see the problem. Watching the very best play bb at the very highest level like last night. What more could anyone want out of a game?

RE: This Is Why a Pro Team Is So Good For My Hometown City
very good and so true...

1. At their best, Grizzlies games aren't just basketball games. They are civic celebrations, brimming with weirdness and joy and a uniquely Memphis case of characters. This was such a game. Who wasn't there? The Grizzlies players were there, of course, but also Hubie Brown and Shane Battier and Penny Hardaway and the Beale Street Flippers and Rick Trotter with that magical voice of his and, yes, the Bongo Lady. Oh, and there was a kid from St. Jude at the game. Pau Gasol tweeted that he was watching from afar. Remember when there was a debate about bringing an NBA team to town? Doesn't that sound ridiculous now?

There is NOTHING like a big Grizz game in Memphis. Last night had the atmosphere of a playoff game, and it was a blast.

81 games, larger venue capacity, unrestrained salary cap? Can't see it, tbh.

It helps that the players and the organization are so involved in the community, and not getting in trouble.

It's all about people grinding, not just players, not just fans, but f/o people like Chris Wallace, owners and co-owners like Timberlake and Pera, as well as Penny and Socks. Fundamentally American lessons.
