Memphis is wayyy too small for a MLB team.

Agreed. MLB stadiums are massive. Pair that with the amount of games in a season and ticket prices and you have a recipe for disaster in Memphis. Redbirds games are not exactly packed on a nightly basis.

The NBA is about perfect for Memphis. And it's awesome.

for nights like this

whether or not we make the playoffs, there is an undeniable excitement in the city and surrounding areas regarding an honest to goodness major professional sports franchise

And no one can take that away

I grew up in Memphis as a huge Tiger fan, but always pined for the NFL - this experience is not a bad consolation prize

Happy for you K2. But the NBA is atrocious in my personal opinion.

Go Griz, win one for K2!

I'd much rather have an NBA team...NFL, MLB, NHL won't work here IMHO.

MLB would work here but again like it read with the Grizzled game to put a great product on the field.

I mean shoot when AutoZone opened the first 3 or 4 seasons Redbirds wetter one of the tops in attendances.

Being so close to St. Louis though is what would hurt because a lot of the baseball fans in Memphis are cardinals fans

Most baseball teams aren't selling out every night. I don't think we could support a baseball team either, but we wouldn't need to average 40 thousand a night or anything to do it. More like 20 or 25.

We don't need an MLB team but I'd bet money that if we had the Rays here winning like they do we'd support them better than Tampa does.

81 games, larger venue capacity, unrestrained salary cap? Can't see it, tbh.

Yep, with so many Cardinals fans, getting their AAA team was perfect for Memphis...esp with AutoZone Park.

No doubt, Memphis has shown they support a winner. Almost in a bandwagon way.

As Zbo would say, "it's a fit." Not sure if having a derivative nickname is the smartest branding (at least in the past, in the remote possibility that the affiliation could change). I always was partial to either Mallards or Pioneers. But now that ownership has changed, that ship has sailed. Some other systems have had at least partial trickle down of nicknames. But, personally, I think the minor league franchises with the deepest resonance have had names independent of their parent organization. I understand the advantage these days of the parent organization deepening their brand vertically throughout the system. Maybe in the future it will go further and further... Arkansas Cardinals instead of Travellers? Migrating nicknames that attach as a condition of affiliation?

Anyway, that's just a small part of the situation, that in no way overshadows the great advantage the city has having AAA baseball in a premier ballpark smack dab in downtown Memphis. Great value for the ticket prices, better than major league baseball, for sure.

RE: This Is Why a Pro Team Is So Good For My Hometown City
Not sure why people say the NFL wouldn't work here. It seems that it would have the opportunity to be the most successful professional franchise in a small market. You have eight home games to fill the stadium. I understand NFL stadiums have larger capacities than NBA arenas, but look what the Tiger football team did in the early 2000s with just a small taste of success. They put 40K in the seats. The NFL is the most popular sport in the country (it's not even close) and generates more money than any other sport. The reason the Oilers (Titans) didn't work in Memphis is because people here realized it was a temporary thing and were offended in many ways.

NBA is perfect for Memphis, but a NFL team would work in a cow pasture half way between here and Little Rock.

I love being able to watch the Grizzlies on TV during road games and being able to actually see Grizz fans in the stands. Its not like the Heat or Lakers visiting an arena, but its a start.
