Quote:Meanwhile, with regards to current candidates that are still in the picture, Jordan Mathews's dad appears to be all in favor of Travis DeCuire maintaining continuity and getting promoted to be the next coach to get a chance. Grant Marek of Rivals chatted with Phil Mathews about why it should be Travis who takes over Monty's mantle.

Quote:With the lack of information about any other real candidates emerging for the job, DeCuire just seems like he's gaining the edge in the race to win the job.

I was beating the Travis DeCuire drum last year. I think he will make a great coach. It would be a big leap and big first time job to go straight to the PAC10/12/14/100, but I think he would do great.

The only issue with Travis to ODU was that he was a BT guy. I'm not sure how much interest he would have had--he played at Montana for BT and was brought here by BT.

Nice to see guys with ODU on their resume get mentioned though.

BT was a Montgomery guy and maybe Montgomery is endorsing this move?

Yep, rumors in Cal say Montgomery wants DeCuire.

Quote:I've discussed most of this here, but to refresh: DeCuire is Monty's choice, he's well-liked among the players and families of the players, he's been groomed for the job for a few years, he knows Xs and Os the best among all the other players, he's our top recruiter and could prove to be a better closer than Monty, and he provides immediate continuity for the program.

I wonder if he would hire BT as an assistant?

Travis was very involved with our search. In fact, I think he was a finalist for the job. And there is no rumor about being Mont's choice. It is absolute fact. He spent about 5 full minutes of his retirement presser telling everyone why he thinks it should be Travis.

Let me preface my question by stating that I am not/was not a supporter of the JJ hire. I still don't think it was a good move for the long term future of our program. With that being said, my questions are truly fact finding.

I never heard who else was a "finalist" for our job. Who else was a finalist?

Does this mean that JJ wowed the search committee/administration?

I had assumed (you know what happens when you ASS U ME) that JJ simply got the job by default. The candidates we wanted kept turning us down and Wood needed/wanted to make a hire.

Could ODUCoach or anyone clarify how the process worked? How did we end up with JJ?

I do remember Jone's name being mentioned almost right away (and everyone hated it), even before word got out about some search committee that was hired to do the coaching search. this made me think Jones was probably on the short list all along, but maybe not the first choice.

Maybe I'm just blanking on it, but the first time I recall Jeff Jones being mentioned for the ODU job was when Teel broke the story and it was posted here:

http://csnbbs.com/thread-617033-post-919...pid9191049

The names everyone heard were Keats, Enfield, Felton, etc...

Jones came out of nowhere, at least in the public view.

I only remember hearing his name mentioned in the very beginning. then really not at all until the actual hire. I was surprised he was hired mainly b/c I heard his name and his connection to WS at the start and then I hear about the searching committee hired and then about WS wanting a younger coach, and then Jones gets hired. sounded like a lot of spent resources just to get the guy connected to the job from the start.

I don't remember, but was Keats actually connected to the job or was that just someone people on here wanted?

Go back in that thread to the very beginning.

You'll see that in post #14 on February 5th, 2013 ODUCoach lists Jeff Jones

In post #101 on February 7th, EverRespect wrote this:
"Looking at all 3 criteria points more toward Jeff Jones. I have a suspicion that is where he might be going given their personal history together."

Now, I have no idea if these posters were throwing darts but they mentioned Jeff Jones 2 months before he was hired. I think most were hoping ODU would make a "splash" hire and i don't think many were pining for ODU to hire Jones. However, his name was mentioned if quickly dismissed.

Even in the "bracket" JJ was listed and soon eliminated. His name was mentioned early and then faded in favor of the glamour guys.

Well, okay...I mean, I wasn't really talking about message boarders throwing stuff against the wall 2 months before the hire, I was speaking more towards more informed guesses as we got closer.

When Selig was on the Cattles Show last week he talked about the hire. I turned it on a few minutes in, so I didn't hear it all. When I tuned in, he said that Enfield was scheduled to come to ODU for an interview and called from USC to say that he was going to accept the job there. Sounded like Enfield was our first choice, did anyone else hear the segment? He also said that Jones was a great hire and if it isn't obvious to everyone yet then it will be (I'm paraphrasing).

Well if the guy who hired him DOESN'T say it is a great hire that would be news.
