Holy freakin warped drive! Since when do we use fantasy characters to add meat to our arguments.

I don't believe even Calkins believed what he wrote.
Since we hired someone that acts out being a fantasy character as a bb coach? Maybe that's his point? Or that CJP might be a space cadet?

My opinion, a very good article. Well thought out and he has great examples of how having a proven assistant can help. Pandering crap, no.

As with anything Calkins writes when he's pandering to the Chris Vernon wannabes, it's hard to know exactly what he means. Pastner should hire an Xs and Os guy? Wow, that's brilliant, especially since he's about the last one in the city to put forth that opinion.

No, the point of the article was pandering to members of The Church of the Anti-Josh. Everything else was obvious and already stated filler.

He has the recruiting thing covered; it's worth a try. The bigger problems are that we didn't make shots, and we were undersized at every position. Geron and Dixon were great defenders as juniors; last year...not so great. Did Pastner unteach them defense? Having both of them play very good defense was going to be a key component to our success.

This really is the key question. What happened? The acolytes of the Church of the Anti-Josh would have us believe he did unteach them defense, but that belies the existence of muscle memory and reflexes. The schemes weren't any different...I have my own theory on what went wrong but haven't voiced it yet because the Priests of the Church of the Anti-Josh haven't quieted down enough yet. Anything anybody says that doesn't involve bashing the coach automatically gets shouted down.

You do know that the defensive rules changed over the summer, right?

They had to re-learn defense. Were they taught?

That was the problem...

The change wasn't as major as thought and the adjustments that were made over the off season cost us...Along with the fact we had no shot blocker behind them...But even with the fact you had no rim protector (DJ, Will Coleman) we still did not adjust during the season, kept the same strategy that got us burned all year long when we played man defense.

As far as defensive minds go, was Jack Murphy a good defensive mind? Just wonderin.

So many new things happening next year! Gonna be a long Summer of our discontent, though.

RE: Great article in the CA on Pastner needing to hire a proven assistant
This article is spot on. I've said before I don't believe he knows what he's doing. I don't mean that as a casual insult. I mean that I literally don't think he knows what to do in many situations. He thinks he does. He tries. But ultimately, he doesn't have years of experience to fall back on as a head coach, so there it is. An ass't with experience, a trusted mentor, could be a great help for Josh as we're waiting for the 'investment to pay off', as I've been told here. But I keep reading he's prideful and stubborn, which seems surprising to me considering his character otherwise.

Well, we actually adjusted once. Went from press to no press. worked for a bit but then our short rotation bit us in the ass.

Excuses excuses.

The changes in the way the defense is/was called didn't affect the team vs the cupcakes on the schedule.... the team romped them just the same.

Rule changes also are not to blame for consistently going OVER screens 35+ feet beyond the basket or having all five guys in the lane leaving proven shooters unattended. Unless the coach new name is Rule Change, it aint to blame. Fact.

I am glad Calkins used John Robic as an example of defensive minds that made a notable difference. Now we have a baseline: KY with Robic vs KY without Robic--starting next year. I'm also excited to see what Coach Robic does with his own team.

No need to apologize for an opinion. Disagreements make the board go round. 04-cheers

As you might remember from his post season interview, CJP assured us that he likes us just the way we are. He advised his critics to keep on keeping on, as our passion is what he admires most about us.

As CJP has mentioned before --the caring and passion of the Memphis fans is one of the main reasons he likes coaching here, as opposed to a place like Zona.

As I recall, that got him into some trouble with Zona fans. 03-lmfao

I think Josh gets an unfair rap sometimes about not making adjustments. However, if you watched UCONN-FLA yesterday, more adjustments were made by both teams while playing the 1st half alone than it seemed Josh did all year.

Good call. That increased even more so after he called out your boy JJ for missing his defensive assignment (like always btw).... you should remember that game. It was quite embarrassing.

The leader of the "I'm rolling with the guys who've been there" called King alls kinds of expletives but given he's one of the chosen nothing came of it. Nice to see a freshmen have the gonads to STEP UP to the seniors....something the head guy never did as evident of the sloppy details to defense all year...

I watched...it was a great game, as was the one that followed. I don't know enough about defense and player capabilities to add anything that hasn't already been said to that kind of a discussion.

Part of the reason I hang out here is the less-heated discussions are informative, while the more heated are somewhat compelling.

Mainly, though, I love our program, our Tigers, our UofM and heartily support the upward trend. 04-rock
