RE: Basketball put Storrs on the map....from FoxSports...
The emphasis on family at UConn is huge. The annual charity game that Jim Calhoun held every year was massive proof. It seems like every player came back to play for it and the love amongst former/current players and coaches was so evident.
Ollie will be keeping this tradition alive. Anyway, it is nice to see that the men's and women's teams are so close at UConn and have each other's backs.

What has been accomplished at Storrs is truly remarkable. Here's a list of the schools that have won 3 National Championships in the tournament era and the date of their first Final Four:
1940 - Indiana
1940 - Kansas
1946 - North Carolina
1948 - Kentucky
1949 - San Francisco (NIT)
1956 - Louisville (NIT)
1962 - UCLA
1963 - Duke
1999 - UConn
In other words, the accomplishments today of every single great program are built on foundations that were laid down long ago - except UConn. Jim Calhoun did what no one else in the past 50 years has been able to do, which is to take a fledgling program and take it to the highest levels of the sport repeatedly without any precedent at that level.
In the interests of fairness, Billy Donovan is knocking on the door of doing something similar at Florida right now. At some point, Donovan will probably win a 3rd title if he doesn't this year. However, it should be noted that Florida did get to a Final Four in 1994 before Donovan got there, laying down the foundation that he built on.
