That's what it is, essentially. Academic conference are pretty much just a bunch of powerpoint talks and poster presentations. It's the primary way to distribute work before it is published in order to garner feedback, as well as initiate collaboration. In this case, it serves mostly as presentation practice for undergrads as they aren't going to establish collaborations on their own since there is no focus to the topics at this meeting. It's a good experience for undergrads, and actually these are selected from the schools, so it is an honor and a line on their CV. Certainly the faculty reps accompanying them mingle.
