UAB, Conference USA working to improve men's basketball RPI, strength of schedule
http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2014/...ng_to.html

"We need to model scheduling after some of the other mid-major conferences that have multiple bids from an at-large standpoint."

Glad to see this issue getting attention.

Very good to see and much needed.

Said that in the future, schedules will have to be approved by CUSA.

Hope that means no more games against 300+ RPI teams like Houston Baptist and a ban or limit on NAIA games.

I agree with all the above. Here is another thought. If you can't find a good game dont play.Just play 27-it wont hurt your RPI.

"I have reached out to the athletics director at Memphis," Mackin (our AD) said. "There is a mutual interest in playing a home and home with each other. Right now I've reached out to him in looking at the '15-16 schedule.

I wouldn't mind playing UAB or USM. The problem with Memphis is the FedExForum requirement that the Tigers play 18 home games a year.

Rumor is, the AAC wants to continue a round robin schedule next year which means 10 conference home games, and 20 total conference games.

Memphis had something like 8 buy games last year with 9 conference home games, and 1 home game with Gonzaga to make the required 18 at home.

Next year with 20 conference games, plus the additional 8 at home required by FedExForum, they're up to 28 which only leaves room for 3 home and home games.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong about the scheduling problem.

I would rather not play a round robin next year--rather than two games with Tulane or ECU, keep a date open for UAB or USM.

Non-D1 games must go first. Then limit or ban scheduling teams with 300+ RPIs.

Bottom line, you still have to win these games in order to make Tourney.

You don't have to win all of them and you don't have to schedule Florida and Kentucky either. When we were building at-large resumes, we were loading the schedule with teams like Clemson, Virginia Tech, Xavier, Dayton, Georgetown, UAB, Richmond and Missouri. Winning about half of those was good enough while splitting better conference rival games against teams like VCU and George Mason.

Is it really obvious? Some people on this board, as well as school AD's grinding and gnashing teeth over being left out of the big dance. They then blame it on lack of schedule cohesion and playing enough good basketball schools.
The bottom line however, is that none of this will matter, if Conf USA schools can not beat the good schools. That was the problem this year, and I don't know why things will be different next year, unless somehow these schools get much better than they are right now.

I guess that means there is no hope of the pirates ever getting to the dance

They've accomplished something far more important already.

You will not find me giving any hope to ECU basketball. I am actually impressed, very impressed, with what Southern Miss and La Tech have been able to do with their basketball teams. ECU basketball is the albatross hanging over ECU sports. It was one of the contributing factors that kept us out of the old Big East.

My original point is this, schools have to win the games that count, or no schedule strategy will matter in the long run. Southern Miss and La Tch will make it t the dance many times before ECU does.
