It will be Heinicke vs. Washington in spring football game
NORFOLK
It will be starting quarterback Taylor Heinicke leading the White team vs. backup quarterback David Washington and the Blue team when Old Dominion holds its annual spring game Saturday at 3 p.m. at Foreman Field.
Coaches have divided the roster into two teams, and they appear to be evenly matched. Heinicke has standout wide receivers Antonio Vaughan and Larry Pinkard to throw to.
But the Blue defense, with starting tackles Chris Smith and Rashaad Coward, starting linebackers Martez Simpson, Andre Simmons and Reece Schmidt and safety Fellonte Misher looks pretty strong.
Coach Bobby Wilder said there will be four 8-minute quarters, with live tackling in the first and third quarters.
“We know we’re a little down with some of our numbers right now because of injuries, but we feel like we have enough for two teams,” Wilder said.
“Coach Jeff Jones, his coaching staff and players will mingle with fans from noon until 3 p.m. in the parking lots south of the stadium. Tickets are $25 at the gate.
Admission to the spring game is free.
“We’ve got six to eight players on the injury report who may be able to play in the thud part” of the game, Wilder said.
So will 21 players who signed with ODU in February or have been invited to walk-on without a scholarship.
In addition, 35 players from the high school classes of 2015 or 2016 will also attend.
Among the top targets for ODU who will attend the game,
John Branch from Dinwiddie High School south of Petersburg,
Jamez Brickhouse from Bayside High in Virginia Beach,
Tyler Davis from Mepham High in New York,
Miles Fox from Collins Hill High in suburban Atlanta,
Channing Hames from Bishop O’Connell in Northern Virgina,
Gary Jennings Jr., from Colonial Forge, Va.
Jalen Nash from Southlake Christian High in North Carolina.
