Marquette Hires Wojo (Duke Assistant) As Head Coach... Good Choice...
For real this time hopefully...

Marquette is reportedly hiring Steve Wojociewski (sp) as head coach. Good choice, has been an assistant for Coach K for 15 years. Young guy, high energy, slap-the-floor defense.

Has added benefit of ESPN blowhards already gushing about the great hire.

Has additional benefit of showing Duke 1997 tourney loss to PC during the first Marquette-Friars matchup next season. Get ready for Shammgod highlights.
04-cheers

Anyway, congrats to Marquette!

We'll probably never know. Jeff Goodman from ESPN brought up how former Marquette player Doc Rivers- his son went to Duke and loved Wojo. Could easily see him being their 2nd choice after Shaka turned them down.

I would have thought they could have hired a guy with previous head coaching experience. He may turn out great, but it would scare me to hire a guy at a major school like Marquette who has never been the head guy.

After Shaka Smart, the other names considered in addition to Wojo were reportedly Ben Howland and Cuonzo Martin. Uncertain what the level of interest was between the candidates and Marquette.

As someone just mentioned upthread, Marquette alum Doc Rivers played a positive role in this Wojo hire.

No doubt his price is fairly low, so maybe he was close to the top if you eliminate everyone they considered (Smart, Howland, Martin) who wanted more money than Marquette was willing to pay.

This is really good. It gives Wojo a chance to prove he can coach in a high profile league before he take over for Coach k and it leaves other high profile coaches out there for teams like BC and Wake.

i really wouldn't think Wojo would be the one that will take over for Coach K. I'd kind of think it'd be Ammaker quite frankly.

I think the Ohio U Coach is the front runner for BC. Hardly a high profile coach. Not sure about Wake- heard they were looking at Danny Manning.

Roy Williams had never been a head coach when he was hired at Kansas. That didn't turn out badly for Kansas or for 'ole Roy.

Either Amaker or Dawkins who is at Stanford.

I'm sure there are plenty of examples where it worked out. I'm also sure there are more examples of where it didn't work out. Personally, for a job that has been fairly high profile over the past 15 years to hire a coach from *outside* the program with zero head coaching experience just seems risky.

I for one hope it's Amaker so Dook can fade into irrelevance.

If chris collins gets Northwestern turned around could be him but how long does coach K coach?

So basically Marquette was too cheap to hire Howland? Or was there another reason they didn't want him?

Howland has a lot of baggage. Wouldn't be shocked if we never see him coach again quite frankly.

He has already said publicly he will be at Duke for at least five more years. All that proves is that he recognizes that he is old enough that some recruits who don't plan on being one and done might be reluctant to sign on if they thought he might retire.

So I don't take what he says as gospel, even if he himself believes it to be true today. Tomorrow may be a different story.

This is going to be an issue for most of the top ACC programs for awhile.

Good for him and Marquette. I was really worried about Cuonzo Martin leaving but Tennessee made smart moves.
