Expansion, some people just can't let it go.

We don't have the same options as the P5, so get a grip on reality.....

P5 doesn't have the same options as P4, and P4 doesn't have the same options as P3, and P3 doesn't have the same options as P2, and P2 doesn't have the same options as the SEC.

Fun to speculate about in the off season... 12 of course, but assuming we got raided again: ODU today, umass if they build a new OCS.

The B12 took TCU and WV from us (and make $20 mil per school). The ACC dismantled the Big East back into a BBall conference. The PAC 12 took CU from the B12 and could have also added OU and OSU. The B10 took Nebraska from the B12 and Maryland from the ACC (I won’t comment on Rutgers). The SEC doesn't need a GOR to keep schools from leaving because there's no better place to go.

Every G5 school other than Air Force, Army, and Navy would join any of the above power conferences despite the perceived FBS hierarchy. Is there something I’m missing BigEastHomer?

RE: UMass or Old Dominion???
BYU isn't coming neither is Air Force... Army will be a waste of AAC space and I'm only saying this b/c of past poor CUSA experience.

UMass on the other hand, has tremendous potential... Their additional northeast eyeball market can be a huge tool for and when Mike Aresco negotiates a new AAC tv deal.

The problem with UMass though, their fans have a football backwards mentality.

RE: UMass or Old Dominion???
Can we worry about building up and promoting the programs that we currently have, before we talk expansion? We have a good core of schools that are dedicated to succeeding both on and off the field. Let's concentrate on them, all this expansion talk just devalues the schools that are currently committed to the AAC.

RE: UMass or Old Dominion???
The AAC is fine....until the Big 12 chooses to expand or Notre Dame becomes a full member of the ACC. Neither of which the AAC can control. So when that happens (and it will happen) what does Old Dominion offer?

Virginia Beach/Norfolk market with 1,800,000 residents, a Top 50 national TV market, Top 20 "metered" NCAA football market/Top 12 "metered" NCAA basketball market (meaning a disproportionately large number of TV's tuned to NCAA football and basketball), Top 35 overall metropolitan market (with no saturation from major league sports or competing major college), $ 40,000,000 annual athletic budget, 14,000 current football season ticket holders/another 10,000 on waiting list, new 35,000 plus seat football stadium in design phase, 6,200 annual average basketball attendance, trip to NCAA Tourny on average once every four years, geographic fit with eastern wing of AAC, natural rival with the Naval Academy (large naval presence here) and ECU (2 1/2 hours south of ODU), perfect travel partner with ECU.

The AAC is not expanding. On top of that ODU needs to improve their academic profile.

RE: UMass or Old Dominion???
Top: BYU
2nd: AFA (Army)
3rd: UTSA/SMiss
4th: ODU/uMass (both require stadium upgrade first)

I still think it's possible to see BYU and AFA someday, provided we somehow become an extremely clear #6. That would mean a renegotiate for several more million per team, repeated BCS bowls, commit to ESPN for a long deal. Schools would need a reason to leave the MWC. Its a long shot, but it could happen. Past that, if needed (if we're raided) we grab from the 3rd and 4th tiers. Otherwise, we'll keep those slots available for the top targets forever.

RE: UMass or Old Dominion???
I think ODU is a lot closer than UMass BUT, I would say that the AAC needs to hold where it is at and see how things look in about 2 years. ODU starts CUSA play for real next season. Their football facilities are about 2 years away from getting completed as I recall.

I think the premise of this thread was picked out by the writing manatees...

The "UMass" and "ODU" balls were the two they picked, but in past iterations, it could just have easily been "Wichita State," or "VCU," or "Army."
