BMW Plans $1 Billion Expansion At Factory In Greer, SC

South Carolina is a right to work state. I love it....

BMW is celebrating its 20th anniversary of building cars in the United States by investing $1 billion in its South Carolina plant to build two of its new X-series vehicles.

The German automaker announced Friday it will produce the X7, a large SUV with three rows of seats, similar to a Cadillac Escalade.

The company will also make the X4, a sportier version of the X3 coupe, and plans to build a plug-in hybrid version of its smaller X5 SUV.

The $1 billion will be spent through 2016 at the plant in Greer, just down Interstate 85 from Spartanburg. BMW said it will hire 800 additional workers, bringing total employment at the plant to 8,800 people.

The Greer plant will make 450,000 vehicles a year by 2016, becoming the largest of the company’s 28 plants around the world.

“We love Germany. But South Carolina is now the BMW capital of the world,” Gov. Nikki Haley said at a ceremony to celebrate the expansion and honor what the German automaker has meant to the state.

Almost 300,000 BMWs were made in South Carolina last year, and more than 2.6 million vehicles have rolled off the plant’s assembly lines in the past two decades.

I spent the last two days in Oak Harbor, Washington and this was on the front page of the Seattle Times:

About 2,000 Boeing engineers and technical staff have been in limbo since before Christmas, when management abruptly announced that about half of them will likely lose their jobs as work is moved to Alabama, South Carolina and Missouri.

They were given no further specifics.

Officials with Boeing’s white-collar union, unable to offer any clarity, have advised affected members to leave and find other jobs.

The new research centers set to grow are all in “right-to-work” states, less friendly to unions.

Full story here

And then there's this from here in Vegas:

North Las Vegas leaders will look to ratify a proposed settlement with city bargaining groups Wednesday, a week after offering union employees an ultimatum: Make a deal or brace for layoffs

Lots more here

It would appear that companies and cities are seeing the light with regard to unions and are putting their foot down.

South Carolina is begging the blue states to keep catering to the unions. We enjoy taking your jobs.

An article I read said that 70% of BMW's South Carolina production will be for export. It says something about the quality and cost-savings that BMW is exporting American-made BMW SAV's around the world.

The new airbus plant in Mobile is going to put some more pressure on Boeing to remain competitive. They're moving 400 engineering jobs to Huntsville.

I'd also add that Mobile, AL and Lake Charles, LA have coastal airports with plenty of space, even with Airbus and Northrop Grumman.

Until the leftists move to your area like locusts, and destroy what made your region so attractive.
