OT ODU Honor Student Wins Fulbright Scholarship
ODU Honor Student Wins Fulbright Award for Engineering Study in England

Like a lot of students who come to Old Dominion University to study engineering, Mark Levenstein thought he wanted to work at NASA Langley Research Center one day - on rockets or some other part of the space program.

But in his freshman year, the Chesapeake native was given opportunities to conduct research with Ali Beskok, former Batten Professor of Computational Engineering in ODU's Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology.

Beskok's research specialty is microfluidics, the design and fabrication of tiny systems and devices through which small amounts of fluid are transmitted. A long way from rockets.

"I never really thought I would get the opportunities to go this route," Levenstein said. "But he was always there with his door open, so I got so involved in it, and was fortunate to get a number of opportunities."

The Fulbright S&T Award is designed to be the most prestigious international scholarship in science, technology, engineering or related fields for outstanding foreign students. Grantees receive three years of Fulbright funding from the U.S. Department of State followed by support from their U.S. host institution until the completion of Ph.D. programs. -

Congratulations Mark

Congratulations to Mr. Levenstein. His selection reflects not only great credit on himself, but also the University. Well done!

And not to make this too political, but the Fulbright Program is facing a $30 million dollar cut, with $10 million being reallocated to the Young South-East Asian Leaders Initiative, and $20 million to the Young African Leaders Initiative. Essentially, money is being reallocated from research at home to more overseas social initiatives.

Why am I not surprised. 05-nono
